Addison Barger delivered a pivotal two-run double in the eighth inning, propelling the Toronto Blue Jays to a thrilling 9-8 comeback win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night at Rogers Centre.
Heading into the bottom of the eighth trailing 8-6, Toronto ignited their rally against Minnesota reliever Génesis Cabrera. Ty France, coming off the bench as a pinch-hitter, narrowed the gap to a single run with his second home run of the season.
Alejandro Kirk, also pinch-hitting, followed with a single that drove Cabrera from the mound. Michael Tonkin stepped in but walked George Springer, setting up Barger’s line drive double off the right field wall, driving in two runs to give Toronto the lead.
Davis Schneider powered the Blue Jays’ offense with two home runs, marking his third career multihomer game and bringing his season total to ten. Andrés Giménez added a homer of his own as Toronto improved to 58-4 when scoring five or more runs.
The Twins’ bats were equally lively. Byron Buxton launched two solo home runs — his 26th and 27th of the year — giving him 16 career multihomer games. Rookie Luke Keaschall blasted his fourth home run, and Brooks Lee followed with his 14th, showcasing Minnesota’s continued long ball prowess.
Seranthony Domínguez (3-4) earned the win for Toronto by recording two key outs, while Jeff Hoffman secured his 29th save of the season out of 36 opportunities.
Outfielder Daulton Varsho made a spectacular leaping catch at the wall to rob Brooks Lee in the third inning, halting a potential extra-base hit and electrifying the crowd.
The Twins extended their club-record home run streak in Toronto to 23 consecutive games, smashing 45 total home runs at Rogers Centre since the streak began on August 26, 2017.
Twins: Zebby Matthews (3-4, 5.30 ERA) is slated to start against the San Diego Padres on Friday night. The Padres’ starting pitcher has yet to be announced.
Blue Jays: Shane Bieber (1-0, 1.50 ERA) is scheduled to face Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta (15-5, 2.68 ERA) at home on Friday night.
The Toronto Blue Jays rallied with a dramatic eighth-inning comeback to edge the Minnesota Twins 9-8 in a high-scoring contest at Rogers Centre. Key performances included Davis Schneider’s two home runs for Toronto and Byron Buxton’s pair for Minnesota, while Addison Barger’s clutch double was the deciding blow. The game featured outstanding defensive plays, record-setting home run streaks, and significant contributions from both bullpens, embodying the competitive spirit of MLB action in 2025.
