The Baltimore Orioles secured a close 3-2 victory over the Athletics, fueled by back-to-back home runs in the opening inning. Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle provided the early spark, both delivering homers to establish a quick lead for Baltimore.
Baltimore's offense struck swiftly in the first inning after Gunnar Henderson drew a two-out walk. Rutschman followed by notching his ninth home run of the season, then Mountcastle sent another ball over the fence — his third homer, coming in his first game back from the 60-day injured list.
On the mound, rookie pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano delivered an impressive performance, allowing just one run and five hits through seven innings to notch his ninth win. Yennier Cano pitched the eighth and, despite surrendering a run, handed the ball to Keegan Akin, who closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the season.
Lawrence Butler doubled to open the fifth for the Athletics, advancing and eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by Luis Urías to narrow the deficit. The Athletics made another push in the eighth when Nick Kurtz singled and scored on a two-out hit by Tyler Soderstrom, bringing the score to 3-2. However, Baltimore’s bullpen held firm in the ninth to seal the win.
Athletics starter J.T. Ginn matched a season-high with nine strikeouts over five innings, allowing three runs and three hits. He was particularly sharp after the first inning, yielding only one hit over his final four frames. Relievers Ben Bowden, Tyler Ferguson, and Elvis Alvarado each added a scoreless inning to keep the game within reach.
The Orioles, now 53-63, have won their last two games. The Athletics, sitting at 51-67, previously took two of three games against Baltimore at home in June.
Ryan Mountcastle’s home run in his first at-bat after returning from the injured list gave the Orioles pivotal momentum on just the third pitch he faced since May 30.
The Athletics currently have a 4.96 ERA, which is the highest in the American League. The Orioles just edge ahead with a 4.87 ERA.
The Saturday matchup will feature Athletics rookie Jack Perkins (0-2, 3.97 ERA) facing off against Orioles rookie Brandon Young (0-5, 5.88 ERA) as the series continues.
The Orioles’ explosive first inning, powered by home runs from Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle, set the tone for a tight 3-2 win over the Athletics. Stellar pitching from Tomoyuki Sugano and timely hitting helped Baltimore hold off a late Athletics rally. Mountcastle’s successful return and a resilient bullpen highlight the Orioles' current momentum, while both teams look to improve their pitching going forward in the MLB season.
