PITTSBURGH -- Andrew McCutchen hit a milestone three-run home run in the fifth inning, powering the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday.
The win secured a series victory for the Pirates, who took two of three games against the Marlins and finished their homestand with a 6-3 record. The loss was Miami's eighth in their last 10 games.
McCutchen's pivotal home run came in the fifth inning off Marlins starter Cal Quantrill. The shot to left-center field was his sixth of the season. More significantly, it was his 241st career home run with the Pirates, moving him past Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente for third place on the franchise's all-time list. He now trails only Willie Stargell (475) and Ralph Kiner (301).
The homer extended the Pirates' lead to 4-0 after they had initially scored a run in the second inning on a throwing error by catcher Nick Fortes.
Bailey Falter (5-3) earned the win for Pittsburgh, delivering a strong outing. The left-hander pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits. The lone run came on rookie Heriberto Hernandez's first career home run. Falter continued his impressive run since the beginning of May, improving to 4-0 with a 1.61 ERA in his last eight starts.
David Bednar closed out the game for the Pirates, pitching a perfect ninth inning for his ninth save in as many opportunities this season.
Quantrill (3-7) took the loss for the Marlins. He lasted five innings, giving up four runs — three of which were earned — on six hits while striking out six. This was his third consecutive loss.
Ke’Bryan Hayes contributed two hits for the victorious Pirates. The Marlins offense also saw multiple hits from several players, with Heriberto Hernandez, Nick Fortes, and Connor Norby each recording two hits.
With the Marlins trailing 1-0 and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, rookie Augustin Ramirez lined out sharply to right field, ending the threat just before McCutchen's game-breaking homer.
David Bednar has been perfect in save situations this season, successfully converting all nine of his opportunities after blowing seven of 30 saves last year.
The Pirates are scheduled to travel to Chicago for the opener of a four-game series against the Cubs on Thursday night. Andrew Heaney (3-4, 3.24) is expected to pitch for the Pirates, while the Cubs have not yet announced their starter.
The Marlins have an off day Thursday before starting a three-game series in Washington. Edward Cabrera (2-2, 3.99) is slated to start for Miami in the series opener.
