ANAHEIM, Calif. — Zach Neto hit a leadoff home run and rookie Christian Moore delivered a tiebreaking sacrifice fly during a decisive four-run eighth inning, propelling the Los Angeles Angels to a 9-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.
The go-ahead rally in the eighth began against Red Sox reliever Garret Whitlock (5-1). LaMonte Wade Jr. singled to open the inning, stole second base, and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Connor Wong that bounced into center field.
Luis Rengifo walked, setting the stage for Christian Moore, who hit a sacrifice fly to give the Angels a 6-5 lead. Zach Neto followed with a single, his third hit of the night. Mike Trout was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs. Taylor Ward walked to force in another run, and Travis d’Arnaud capped the inning with a two-run single, extending the Angels' lead to 9-5.
Angels left-hander Reid Detmers navigated a bases-loaded situation with one out in the seventh, striking out Roman Anthony and Trevor Story with high-velocity fastballs to escape the jam.
Sam Bachman (1-0) earned the win for the Angels, retiring the side in order in the eighth inning.
Angels closer Kenley Jansen departed the game in the ninth after throwing just four pitches due to injury. Hector Neris entered and secured the final three outs to close out the win.
Boston starter Walker Buehler struggled early after being given a 3-0 lead, walking four and hitting two batters during a five-run first inning for the Angels. He finished with a career-high seven walks over four innings. Despite his difficulties, the Red Sox pulled him off the hook when Trevor Story hit a solo home run off reliever Ryan Zeferjahn in the sixth inning, tying the game at 5-all.
The Red Sox scored three runs in the first inning on five hits off Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz, including a two-run single by Wilyer Abreau. They later cut the deficit to 5-4 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Connor Wong.
