The Arizona Diamondbacks secured a 6-2 victory over the San Diego Padres, delivering a strong team performance in Phoenix. Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. each contributed two RBIs, energizing the Diamondbacks offense for a pivotal MLB win.
Tyler Locklear and Alek Thomas each launched solo home runs for Arizona, adding important runs to the scoreboard. Gurriel kicked off the scoring early, driving in Ketel Marte with an RBI single off Padres starter JP Sears, providing Arizona with a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. Shortly after, Carroll delivered a sacrifice fly that plated Blaze Alexander, extending the lead to 2-0.
Brandon Pfaadt improved to 11-7 for the season, working 5 2/3 innings and allowing only two runs. He was lifted in the sixth inning with traffic on the bases, but Andrew Hoffmann ended the threat by inducing a fly out and pitched a clean seventh inning. Kyle Backhus was entrusted with the final six outs, earning his first career save as he shut down the Padres offense in the closing frames.
Manny Machado sparked a Padres rally in the third with a two-out double, scoring on another double from Jackson Merrill. In the subsequent innings, Gavin Sheets and Ramón Laureano kept the momentum going, with Sheets scoring off a sharp single from Jake Cronenworth in the sixth inning. Nevertheless, the Padres were unable to overcome the Diamondbacks' early lead.
Jorge Barrosa’s leadoff double in the fourth inning set the stage for another scoring burst. He advanced to third on Marte’s single and then crossed the plate on a Carroll double. Gurriel followed up by driving in Carroll, padding the Diamondbacks’ lead to 5-1 and putting the game firmly in Arizona’s control.
Alek Thomas went 2-for-4 and continues to produce at the plate, now hitting .371 (13-for-35) with a double, three home runs, five RBIs, and two walks over his last 11 games since the All-Star break.
With this victory, the Diamondbacks have now won three consecutive games after previously dropping nine of ten, signaling a significant turnaround in their season momentum.
The series continues on Tuesday as Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (1-3, 6.46 ERA) is set to square off against Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson (6-3, 3.20 ERA).
The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Diego Padres 6-2 by leveraging timely hitting from Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., powerful solo homers from Tyler Locklear and Alek Thomas, and solid pitching from Brandon Pfaadt and the bullpen. Alek Thomas continued to shine offensively post-All-Star break. This win marks the Diamondbacks' third straight as the team looks to build on their newfound momentum in the National League. The next game will see Yu Darvish and Ryne Nelson facing off as the series resumes.
