Ha-Seong Kim powered the Atlanta Braves to their eighth straight victory on Sunday, hitting a home run and driving in two runs in a 6-2 win over the Detroit Tigers.
The Detroit Tigers continued to struggle at home, finishing their final homestand of the season winless at 0-6. They were outscored 36-14 over those six games and have now lost nine of their last ten, causing their lead in the American League Central to narrow to just one game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians.
Spencer Strider (7-13) delivered a strong outing for the Braves, pitching five scoreless innings while allowing six hits, three walks, and striking out six. The Atlanta bullpen combined to cover the remaining frames efficiently to close out the win.
Casey Mize (14-6) took the loss for Detroit after allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings.
The Braves built their lead steadily, scoring a run in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings. The Tigers' offense failed to deliver in key situations, stranding multiple runners and missing crucial opportunities to score. Atlanta broke the game open with a three-run ninth inning, capitalizing on control issues and defensive lapses from the Tigers.
Tanner Rainey made his debut for Detroit in the ninth inning, but was unable to record an out, allowing two walks and an RBI double. Paul Sewald came in with the score at 4-0, but the Braves added two more runs on a sacrifice fly and another RBI double.
A 27-minute rain delay halted play during the seventh-inning stretch, but did not slow Atlanta's momentum.
Atlanta threatened to increase their lead in the seventh inning, loading the bases. However, a controversial call on a force play at second base ended the rally. Although replays indicated Zach McKinstry had come off the base before completing the play, the Braves could not challenge the ruling, having already used their review opportunity.
This season, the Tigers attracted 2,413,442 fans to Comerica Park—a jump of more than 500,000 from 2024 and their highest attendance since 2016.
The Braves return home to begin a three-game series against the Washington Nationals. Chris Sale (5-5, 2.35 ERA) is scheduled to start for Atlanta, while MacKenzie Gore (5-14, 4.00 ERA) is slated to take the mound for the Nationals.
Detroit will host the Cleveland Guardians in a pivotal three-game series to determine first place in the AL Central. The opener will feature a matchup of aces, with Tarik Skubal (13-5, 2.23 ERA) starting for the Tigers against Gavin Williams (11-5, 3.06 ERA) for Cleveland.
The Atlanta Braves extended their winning streak to eight games with a 6-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers, who continue to slide at a crucial point in the season. Ha-Seong Kim led the way for Atlanta both at the plate and on the basepaths, while Spencer Strider and the Braves bullpen kept Detroit's bats quiet. As the Braves look to stay hot against the Nationals, the Tigers face a must-win series against the Guardians to preserve their slim AL Central lead.
