The Atlanta Braves capped off an impressive four-game sweep against the Washington Nationals with a commanding 9-4 win in Washington. Marcell Ozuna led the offensive charge, driving in three runs, while Matt Olson powered a solo home run to bolster the Braves’ dominance.
Marcell Ozuna was the spark for Atlanta’s comeback, starting in the sixth inning with a key single to right that brought home Ozzie Albies and Drake Baldwin, knotting the game at 3-3. In the eighth, Ozuna delivered again, doubling to right to plate Ha-Seong Kim and extend the Braves lead to 6-3.
Matt Olson stayed hot at the plate, launching his 28th home run of the season in the fifth inning. The blast marked his fifth homer in the past six games and gave Olson 11 RBI over that stretch.
Rookie starter Hurston Waldrep continued his strong run, retiring the first 13 Nationals hitters and finishing with eight strikeouts in five innings. Waldrep (5-1) only gave up hits in the fifth, when the Nationals managed three runs to briefly take the lead.
Drake Baldwin drove in Ronald Acuña Jr. with an RBI double to begin Atlanta’s sixth-inning surge. Nacho Alvarez Jr. then slashed a single to give the Braves a 4-3 edge. In the final frame, the Braves tacked on three more runs with RBI from Ozzie Albies, Ha-Seong Kim, and Michael Harris II, sealing the victory.
The Nationals grabbed a 3-0 lead in the fifth thanks to RBI from Dylan Crews, Robert Hassell III, and James Wood. However, reliever Clayton Beeter (0-3) couldn’t hold back the Braves, surrendering two earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning in the sixth.
The fourth run for Atlanta proved pivotal. On Nacho Alvarez Jr.'s RBI single, Marcell Ozuna was tagged out at third base just after Ha-Seong Kim crossed home. The Braves challenged the call on Ozuna, but the play stood. Washington also challenged whether Kim scored before Ozuna’s out, but their challenge also failed, confirming the run and the out.
Matt Olson’s home run was his fifth in six games, underscoring his role as a consistent run producer with 11 RBI in that span.
Both teams enjoy a day off before starting new series. The Braves will turn to right-hander Bryce Elder (7-10, 5.56 ERA) when they face the Detroit Tigers on Friday. The Nationals, meanwhile, have yet to announce their starter ahead of their upcoming matchup against the New York Mets.
The Atlanta Braves showed resilience and power, overturning a deficit and completing a four-game sweep of the Washington Nationals. Marcell Ozuna’s three RBI, Matt Olson’s hot hitting, and Hurston Waldrep’s strong start propelled Atlanta to a 9-4 win, keeping their momentum rolling as they head into a new series. Fans can look forward to more high-impact performances from the Braves as the season continues.
