The Baltimore Orioles secured a 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees, thanks to a dominant pitching performance from Trevor Rogers. Rogers pitched six one-hit innings, helping Baltimore hand the Yankees a setback in their pursuit of the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays.
Trevor Rogers improved to 9-2 for the season, lowering his ERA to an impressive 1.35 over 17 starts. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished the outing with seven strikeouts and two walks. This outing marked his 15th straight start allowing two or fewer runs, which is the longest streak in the majors this year.
Ryan Mountcastle put the Orioles ahead with a solo home run off Yankees starter Will Warren in the second inning. Baltimore took advantage of two New York errors in the sixth, scoring twice on Mountcastle’s sacrifice fly and Samuel Basallo's RBI grounder. Mountcastle’s effort gave the Orioles a 3-0 lead.
For the Yankees, Jazz Chisholm Jr. provided the spark with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, joining the 30-30 club with 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases on the year. However, Gunnar Henderson responded with an RBI double for Baltimore in the bottom of the inning, restoring the Orioles’ two-run lead.
After Rogers exited following 106 pitches, the Yankees mounted a threat in the eighth inning by putting runners on second and third against reliever Rico Garcia. However, Giancarlo Stanton grounded out to third base, ending the rally. Keegan Akin shut the door in the ninth, recording his eighth save of the season.
Although Trevor Rogers will not qualify for the ERA title, his 1.35 ERA currently ranks as the fifth-best in the live ball era for a pitcher with at least 100 innings. Only Bob Gibson (1968), Ted Abernathy (1967), Red Munger (1944), and Bruce Sutter (1977) boast better marks.
The teams meet again on Saturday night. The Yankees will send Carlos Rodón (16-9) to the mound, while the Orioles will counter with Tomoyuki Sugano (10-8).
The Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees 4-2, propelled by Trevor Rogers' outstanding pitching and key hits from Ryan Mountcastle and Gunnar Henderson. Jazz Chisholm Jr. reached the exclusive 30-30 club for New York, but the Yankees could not overcome Baltimore’s early lead. The Orioles continue their strong September, impacting the AL East playoff race and setting up an intriguing rematch in their next contest.
