The New York Yankees clinched a thrilling 7-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in extra innings, thanks to Ben Rice’s dramatic grand slam in the top of the 10th inning. The win helped the Yankees keep pace with first-place Toronto in the AL East standings.
Ben Rice was the star for New York, collecting four hits and driving in five runs. In the 10th inning, with the game tied at 1-1, Rice smashed a grand slam to right-center field off Baltimore’s Keegan Akin, giving the Yankees a commanding lead. Rice’s clutch performance proved pivotal as the Yankees broke open the game in the final frame.
Following Rice’s heroics, Jazz Chisholm Jr. added a solo home run and Anthony Volpe contributed an RBI single before the inning concluded, padding the Yankees’ lead further.
Kade Strowd of the Orioles took the loss after striking out the side in the ninth but issuing a walk to Aaron Judge to start the 10th. For the Yankees, David Bednar picked up the win, and was one of six relievers the team used in the game.
Baltimore’s Samuel Basallo homered in the fifth inning for the Orioles' only run, while Rice responded with an RBI single in the sixth. Orioles starter Kyle Bradish was effective, striking out nine and allowing just one run over six innings. Yankees rookie Cam Schlittler turned in a quality start, permitting one run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts.
Before his grand slam, Ben Rice hit a dribbler toward third base that rolled just foul. The play could have resulted in a routine force out for the Orioles had it stayed fair, but Rice took advantage of his second chance and cleared the bases with a home run.
The Yankees’ grand slam was their ninth of the season, tying them with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the major league lead.
Both teams get a day off on Monday. The Yankees will send Luis Gil (4-1) to the mound on Tuesday night to face the Chicago White Sox, while the Orioles start a new home series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
