Brandon Pfaadt delivered a strong performance on the mound, pitching six impressive innings to help the Arizona Diamondbacks secure a 5-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night in Phoenix.
Arizona seized control of the game in the second inning, scoring three runs against Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito. The rally was aided by a costly error from Trevor Story. Jake McCarthy played a pivotal role, driving in two runs during the inning, while Geraldo Perdomo added a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 3-0.
With the loss, the Red Sox slipped 1 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees for the top American League wild-card spot. They now trail the Toronto Blue Jays by 4 1/2 games for the AL East lead, with only 19 games remaining in the season.
Brandon Pfaadt improved his record to 13-8, allowing just one run on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Giolito, who had won nine of his previous ten decisions, lasted five-plus innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits.
Defensively, Ceddanne Rafaela of the Red Sox made a spectacular leaping catch in the fifth inning, robbing Corbin Carroll of a potential home run. Not to be outdone, Blaze Alexander of the Diamondbacks made a similar homer-stealing grab off Alex Bregman’s bat in the eighth.
The second-inning grounder that got past Trevor Story enabled Arizona to take a lead they would not relinquish.
The Diamondbacks have now won six consecutive games against the Red Sox, including a sweep at Fenway Park last season.
The series continues on Sunday, with Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (11-6, 3.07 ERA) facing Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson (7-3, 3.57 ERA).
The Arizona Diamondbacks continued their dominance over the Boston Red Sox with a 5-1 win, powered by a strong outing from Brandon Pfaadt and timely offense in the second inning. Defensive gems from both teams kept the game exciting, but it was Arizona's capitalization on Boston's miscues that proved decisive. As playoff races heat up, the Red Sox face increasing pressure in both the wild card and division standings, while Arizona carries momentum into the remainder of the series.
