ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves defeated the New York Mets 5-0 on Wednesday night behind a dominant performance from Chris Sale, who pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson added home runs as the Braves handed the Mets their season-high fifth straight loss.
Sale (5-4) was outstanding, allowing only five hits and one walk while striking out seven over 8 2/3 innings. He kept Mets runners from advancing past second base before Raisel Iglesias secured the final out with a groundout. Sale threw 116 pitches in his near-shutout effort, his longest outing since 2019.
The start continued a dominant stretch for Sale, who has allowed just four runs over his last 41 2/3 innings, compiling a 0.86 ERA across his last six starts.
Offensively for the Braves, Matt Olson connected for his 15th home run of the season in the seventh inning. Ozzie Albies contributed with a strong 2-for-3 performance, including a double and a triple. Albies remained in the game after being hit on the right knee by a pitch while swinging at a third strike in the sixth inning.
For the Mets, second baseman Jeff McNeil extended his major league-leading on-base streak to 20 games with a 1-for-3 night. Mets starter Paul Blackburn (0-1) took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings.
The Braves extended their early lead to 2-0 in the first inning on a catcher's interference call. Mets catcher Luis Torrens blocked a pitch with a runner on third. When attempting to retrieve the loose ball, he used his mask in his right hand to sweep it into his glove. The play was ruled catcher's interference and an error, allowing the crucial run to score.
Ronald Acuña Jr.'s 419-foot home run to center field in the first inning marked the 36th leadoff home run of his career and his second of the season.
Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider (1-5, 4.35 ERA) is scheduled to pitch against New York Mets right-hander Clay Holmes (7-3, 2.87) on Thursday, wrapping up the three-game series.
