Bryan Reynolds came through in the clutch for the Pittsburgh Pirates with a two-out, two-run triple in the eighth inning, propelling Pittsburgh to a 3-2 comeback win over the Cincinnati Reds.
The Pirates trailed late but mounted a rally in the eighth inning. Isiah Kiner-Falefa drew a one-out walk from Reds reliever Tony Santillan, who fell to 1-4 on the season. After a two-out single by Tommy Pham put runners on the corners, Reynolds tripled to right field, giving the Pirates the lead.
Kyle Nicolas earned his first win of the season by pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Dennis Santana worked the ninth inning to secure his seventh save.
Pirates starter Mitch Keller allowed two runs on six hits and three walks across 5 2/3 innings. Dauri Moreta came out of the bullpen with two outs and two runners on base in the sixth, but Tyler Stephenson doubled off him on his second pitch, putting Cincinnati temporarily ahead 2-1.
On the Reds’ side, rookie Chase Burns turned heads by striking out 10 Pirates over six innings, surrendering just one run on three hits. Burns’ electric fastball topped 100 mph five times as he struck out the side in the first inning.
Cincinnati loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning but came away with just one run after Jake Fraley grounded into a double play. The Pirates answered back in the fourth inning when Reynolds and Oneil Cruz hit back-to-back doubles to tie the game 1-1.
Pittsburgh improved to 51-66, winning seven of its last 11 games. Cincinnati slid to 60-57 with three straight losses and seven defeats in their last 11 contests. The Pirates have hit the fewest home runs in the majors with 83, while allowing only 112, the fourth-fewest in the league.
The Pirates have yet to name a starting pitcher for Saturday’s matchup, while the Reds are scheduled to send Nick Martinez (9-9, 4.66 ERA) to the mound for the third game of the four-game series.
