The Pittsburgh Pirates ended their seven-game losing streak with a strong 4-1 win against the Washington Nationals, thanks to standout performances from Bubba Chandler, Andrew McCutchen, and Nick Yorke.
Bubba Chandler, making just his second major league start, was dominant on the mound. He carried a perfect game into the sixth inning before giving up a single to Dylan Crews. Chandler finished with six innings pitched, allowing only two hits and one run, striking out seven without issuing a walk over 81 pitches.
The pivotal moment came in the eighth inning when the Pirates loaded the bases with two walks and an infield single. With the Nationals leading 1-0, Andrew McCutchen delivered a clutch two-run single to right-center, putting the Pirates in front. After Oneil Cruz walked to reload the bases, Nick Yorke’s grounder deflected off second baseman Luis Garcia Jr., allowing two more runs to score and extending Pittsburgh's lead.
Jared Triolo capped the scoring for Pittsburgh with a solo home run in the ninth inning, securing the 4-1 victory.
Washington initially took the lead in the sixth when Dylan Crews singled, advanced to second on a flyout, and scored on a single by Robert Hassell III. However, the Nationals' offense was limited by Chandler's stellar pitching and couldn't add to their tally.
Carmen Mlodzinski earned the win with two strong innings of relief for Pittsburgh. For the Nationals, Cole Henry took the loss after walking two in the eighth. Starter Andrew Alvarado kept the Pirates off the board through six innings but had to pitch around trouble multiple times, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out five.
The turning point came in the eighth inning as McCutchen’s opposite-field single off a first-pitch change-up from PJ Poulin gave the Pirates their first lead, setting the stage for a much-needed victory.
Pittsburgh has now won 9 of its last 11 games against National League East opponents.
The Pirates will send right-hander Mike Burrows (2-4, 3.99 ERA) to the mound in the series finale, facing Nationals right-hander Cade Cavalli (3-1, 4.67 ERA) on Sunday.
The Pittsburgh Pirates snapped their losing skid with a 4-1 triumph over the Washington Nationals, highlighted by Bubba Chandler’s impressive start and clutch hitting from veterans like Andrew McCutchen and Nick Yorke. A strong bullpen performance and late offensive surge secured the win, giving the Pirates momentum as they head into the series finale against the Nationals.
