The Cleveland Guardians surged to their fourth consecutive victory with a 9-5 win over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field. Powered by Carlos Santana’s four RBIs and a pivotal three-run double from rookie C.J. Kayfus, the Guardians took control early and never looked back.
Cleveland set the tone in the first inning. Daniel Schneemann drew a walk off Aaron Civale, followed by a double from José Ramírez to put runners on second and third. Kyle Manzardo was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Santana delivered a two-run double. After a two-out walk to Bo Naylor, Kayfus cleared the bases with his three-run double, giving Cleveland a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Guardians continued to add on in the third when Manzardo doubled and scored on Santana’s single. In the fourth, Kayfus doubled and later scored on a balk, and Schneemann chased Civale from the game with an RBI single. Santana then drew a bases-loaded walk against reliever Mike Vasil to push the score to 9-1.
Chicago responded with Brooks Baldwin’s solo home run off Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee in the third inning. Bibee allowed four runs on five hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings, exiting after Curtis Mead’s two-run single. The Guardians bullpen held steady, with Matt Festa, Jakob Junis, Erik Sabrowski, and Cade Smith closing out the final innings.
With the victory, Cleveland improved to 60-55, having now won eight of their last eleven games and four consecutive road games. They carried momentum from a previous series sweep over the Mets.
The White Sox, meanwhile, fell to 42-74, suffering their fifth straight loss and eighth in their last twelve outings.
C.J. Kayfus made a significant impact in just his sixth major league game, finishing with two doubles and providing a crucial three-run hit that helped Cleveland establish an early lead.
Corey Julks became the first Cleveland player since Clint Brown in 1936 to hit two doubles and score two runs after entering a game as a substitute. Remarkably, Brown was a pitcher during his accomplishment.
Aaron Civale, starting for Chicago, entered the game with fifteen consecutive scoreless innings but was tagged for nine runs on eight hits over just 3 1/3 innings. For Cleveland, Tanner Bibee earned the win by limiting the White Sox despite some late damage, and the Guardians’ bullpen secured the victory with three strong innings of relief.
The Guardians will send left-hander Joey Cantillo (2-2, 4.37 ERA) to the mound on Saturday, while the White Sox counter with right-hander Sean Burke (4.23 ERA).
The Cleveland Guardians continued their strong run with a dominant 9-5 win over the Chicago White Sox, driven by standout performances from Carlos Santana and rookie C.J. Kayfus. Cleveland’s offense struck early and often, while their bullpen held firm to preserve the victory. The Guardians' win extends their winning streak and improves their position in the standings, while the White Sox continue to struggle for wins. Fans can look forward to more action as the series continues.
