The Chicago Cubs showcased their resilience as they edged past the Los Angeles Angels 4-3, completing a three-game sweep in Anaheim. This hard-fought victory marked the Cubs’ third consecutive series win, improving their record to 8-2 over their last ten games.
Nico Hoerner made a significant impact against former Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks with an RBI double. Hoerner, alongside Matt Shaw, led the Cubs offense with two hits each, providing solid support for starter Jameson Taillon.
Jameson Taillon (9-6) pitched five strong innings, allowing just one run and helping maintain the Cubs' momentum. Daniel Palencia secured the victory with a tense ninth inning, working out of a jam to earn his 20th save of the season.
Taylor Ward crushed his 30th home run in the opening inning, giving the Angels an early 1-0 lead and marking his first 30-homer season. Despite the power display, the Angels fell short and have now dropped to 2-7 since their sweep of the Dodgers.
Kyle Hendricks, now with the Angels after 11 seasons and a 2016 World Series win with Chicago, faced his former teammates for the first time. He allowed four runs on five hits across 4 1/3 innings, with three walks and two strikeouts.
Kyle Tucker delivered a game-tying RBI single in the third, while Hoerner’s double in the fourth put the Cubs ahead. The fifth inning saw Chicago extend its lead to 4-1 thanks to a sacrifice fly from Pete Crow-Armstrong and an RBI single by Carson Kelly. The Angels clawed back with an RBI double from Ward and a grounder from Luis Rengifo in the sixth, narrowing the gap to 4-3.
Reliever Daniel Palencia struck out rookie Christian Moore on a full-count, 99.9-mph fastball with the go-ahead run on base in the ninth inning, then ended the game with a strikeout of Bryce Teodoso, securing the Cubs’ win.
Kyle Tucker was a standout in the series, going 5-for-12 with three home runs and seven RBI after returning from a brief rest period.
The Angels will send right-hander Jose Soriano (8-9, 4.00 ERA) to the mound as they face the Texas Rangers on Monday. The Cubs have yet to announce their starter for Tuesday's series opener against the San Francisco Giants.
The Chicago Cubs continued their winning ways with a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, completing a series sweep fueled by key contributions from Nico Hoerner, Matt Shaw, and strong pitching by Jameson Taillon and Daniel Palencia. Taylor Ward's 30th homer highlighted the effort for the Angels, but the Cubs’ timely hitting and bullpen prowess made the difference. This win strengthens the Cubs’ case as one of MLB’s hottest teams and sets the tone for their upcoming series in San Francisco.
