DETROIT -- Tyler Stephenson hit a grand slam in a six-run fifth inning, powering the Cincinnati Reds to an 11-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
Elly De La Cruz, Spencer Steer, and Matt McLain also homered for the Reds, who bounced back after being outscored significantly in their two previous games.
The American League-leading Tigers are 4-2 in their last six contests but have surrendered double-digit runs in each of their recent losses.
Brady Singer earned the win, improving his record to 7-4. He allowed just one run on four hits over six innings, walking three and striking out four.
Jack Flaherty took the loss for Detroit, falling to 5-7. He surrendered seven runs on five hits, including three home runs, and issued five walks in 4 2/3 innings.
De La Cruz started the scoring in the fourth inning with a leadoff 110 mph line drive home run to right field, his second homer in as many days.
The Tigers briefly tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on Wenceel Pérez's RBI single. However, the Reds responded decisively with six runs in the top of the fifth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate.
Jake Fraley singled to start the fifth, and TJ Friedl drew a walk after one out. Gavin Lux followed with a single, scoring Fraley. Flaherty then walked De La Cruz to load the bases, setting the stage for Stephenson's second career grand slam on the very next pitch.
Flaherty retired the next batter, but his outing ended when Spencer Steer hit another home run.
Matt McLain added a three-run homer off John Brebbia in the eighth inning. The Reds capped the scoring with a run off Tigers catcher Jake Rogers in the ninth.
Both teams made run-saving defensive plays in the third inning. In the top half, Tigers first baseman Colt Keith made a bare-handed stop of Gavin Lux's hard grounder after it deflected off the bag, recording the final out with runners on first and second.
In the bottom of the third, Elly De La Cruz took Jake Fraley's throw from right field and threw out Javier Báez at the plate as he attempted to score on Trey Sweeney's double.
Jack Flaherty has allowed a team-high 14 home runs through his 14 starts, averaging 1.7 homers per nine innings.
The series concludes on Sunday. Detroit is scheduled to start right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-0, 4.32 ERA) against Cincinnati left-hander Wade Miley (1-0, 9.00 ERA).
