The Cleveland Guardians secured a dramatic 7-5 win over the Detroit Tigers in a 10-inning battle, marking their 10th victory in the last 11 games. This win also extended Cleveland’s winning streak to five, tying their season high.
Steven Kwan, Angel Martinez, José Ramírez, and Kyle Manzardo made history by delivering four extra-base hits in an extra inning—a feat the Guardians hadn’t accomplished in 64 years. In the 10th inning, Kwan started with a double, Martinez followed with a triple, and then Ramírez and Manzardo each added doubles. Gabriel Arias capped off the inning with a one-out RBI single, propelling Cleveland to a commanding 7-3 lead.
Detroit tied the score 3-3 in the ninth thanks to Kerry Carpenter’s two-out home run off Cleveland reliever Cade Smith, who missed out on his 16th save. However, Cleveland responded in the 10th with an offensive explosion.
Spencer Torkelson gave the Tigers hope with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to Cleveland’s lead.
Other notable performances included C.J. Kayfus’s RBI single in the second inning and Bo Naylor’s RBI double in the sixth, helping Cleveland build an early advantage. Gabriel Arias and Gleyber Torres also homered, contributing to the game’s back-and-forth scoring pace.
Cleveland improved to 11-6 in extra innings this season, which is the best record in Major League Baseball. This crucial win helped the Guardians close the gap in the American League wild card race, moving within three games of a spot and 5.5 games behind the AL Central-leading Tigers.
The last time the Guardians had four extra-base hits in an extra inning was on May 10, 1961, when Tito Francona, Chuck Essegian, Woodie Held, and Bubba Phillips accomplished the feat in an 8-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Players wore No. 21 in honor of Roberto Clemente Day. Unfortunately, Tigers rookie pitcher Jackson Jobe, who usually wears the number, is out for the rest of the season with a flexor injury.
The series continues as Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty (8-13, 4.69 ERA) faces off against Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams (10-5, 3.16 ERA) in Wednesday’s matchup.
The Cleveland Guardians delivered a historic offensive performance in the 10th inning, overcoming the Detroit Tigers 7-5 and strengthening their postseason bid. With four extra-base hits in a single extra inning, Cleveland displayed offensive prowess not seen in over six decades. Their resilience in extra innings continues to set them apart as they aim for an American League wild card berth. The series remains pivotal for both teams as the postseason race intensifies.
