CINCINNATI — Hunter Goodman scored on a two-out wild pitch in the eighth inning to lift the Colorado Rockies to a 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.
Rockies right-hander Germán Márquez turned in a strong outing, striking out a season-high eight batters. Ryan McMahon provided early offense for Colorado with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, giving the Rockies a 2-1 lead. Márquez held the Reds to four hits over six innings before exiting.
Cincinnati managed to tie the game in the seventh against Rockies reliever Jake Bird (3-1). Will Benson led off with a single, followed by a double from Noelvi Marte. T.J. Friedl then brought in the tying run with an RBI groundout.
Reds rookie right-hander Chase Burns delivered the best outing of his young career, striking out a career-high 10 hitters across six innings.
Noelvi Marte gave the Reds an initial 1-0 lead in the third with his fifth home run of the season. Marte had a productive night overall, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Despite opportunities, Cincinnati left runners on base in eight of the nine innings.
The decisive run came in the eighth against Reds reliever Tony Santillan (1-3). Santillan loaded the bases and was one strike away from escaping the jam when he threw a wild pitch that allowed Goodman to score.
Victor Vodnik closed out the game for the Rockies, earning his second save. He navigated around Marte's ninth-inning double and Elly De La Cruz's third intentional walk of the game to secure the win.
In the seventh inning with a runner on third and two outs, Jake Bird intentionally walked Elly De La Cruz before striking out Austin Hays to keep the game tied.
With their 22nd win of the season, the Rockies avoided tying the MLB record for fewest wins before the All-Star break (21), shared by the 1945 Phillies and 1952 Pirates.
The second game of the series is scheduled for Saturday. Colorado RHP Bradley Blalock (0-2, 12.94 ERA) is expected to face Cincinnati RHP Brady Singer (7-7, 4.32 ERA).
