DENVER -- Brenton Doyle delivered a game-tying two-run single and later crossed home as the go-ahead run on Ezequiel Tovar's sacrifice fly during a pivotal four-run sixth inning, powering the Colorado Rockies to a 7-6 comeback win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.
Tyler Freeman led the Rockies' offensive effort with three hits, including a double, while Hunter Goodman contributed an RBI triple. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for Colorado, who improved to 3-14 for the month of September.
The Los Angeles Angels' struggles persisted, as the team suffered its eighth consecutive defeat.
Hunter Goodman opened the scoring with a first-inning triple that brought Freeman home, followed by a sacrifice fly from Blaine Crim that added another run for Colorado. The Angels took the lead in the second inning with home runs from Christian Moore and Denzer Guzman, moving ahead 3-2. However, Freeman drove in the tying run for the Rockies with his second hit of the night.
After a three-run fifth inning from Los Angeles put pressure on the Rockies, Colorado answered emphatically in the sixth with a four-run rally, including a pair of sacrifice flies.
The Rockies' bullpen combined for a strong showing, tossing four innings of one-hit ball in relief of starter Bradley Blalock. Blalock allowed eight hits and six earned runs with four strikeouts, but Victor Vodnik secured his ninth save of the season. For the Angels, Mitch Farris was tagged with the loss, surrendering eight hits and seven runs while fanning five in his fourth career start.
Hunter Goodman's 61 extra-base hits this season are the most ever recorded in a single season by a Rockies primary catcher, setting a new franchise milestone. Goodman follows in the footsteps of Ezequiel Tovar (75, 2024) and C.J. Cron (60, 2022) as the third Rockies player since 2022 to reach at least 60 extra-base hits in a season.
The series continues as Angels right-hander Kyle Hendricks (7-10, 5.01 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound against Rockies right-hander Germán Márquez (3-14, 6.73 ERA) in the second game of the three-game set.
The Colorado Rockies overcame a late deficit with a resilient sixth-inning rally to edge the Los Angeles Angels 7-6. Brenton Doyle's clutch hitting and key contributions from Tyler Freeman and Hunter Goodman provided the spark Colorado needed to end their losing skid. The Rockies' bullpen was instrumental, locking down the Angels' offense late. This matchup showcased dramatic lead changes, milestone accomplishments, and set the stage for a compelling remainder of the series as both teams seek improved outcomes in September MLB action.
