The Detroit Tigers made a stunning comeback to secure a 5-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night in Kansas City. Key offensive performances from Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter, each notching two-run doubles, powered the Tigers’ rally. Dillon Dingler added a solo home run to cap the Detroit scoring.
The Royals got off to a fast start, jumping to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Yastrzemski led off with a first-pitch home run, marking his 11th career leadoff homer and his fourth since joining Kansas City. Bobby Witt Jr. extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a single, followed by Maikel Garcia’s 14th home run of the season.
Detroit’s starting pitcher Chris Paddack faced some early trouble, allowing three runs on five hits in just 3 1/3 innings. However, the Tigers' bullpen responded with a shutout, holding the Royals scoreless and limiting them to four hits over the remaining innings. Kansas City struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, finishing 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position over the final five innings.
Kyle Finnegan (4-4) was impressive out of the bullpen, pitching 1 2/3 innings of shutout baseball with three strikeouts. Will Vest closed the door in the ninth inning, earning his 20th save of the season. On the Royals’ side, Seth Lugo (8-7) lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks. The defeat keeps Kansas City three games behind Seattle for the American League’s final wild card spot.
Riley Greene and Gleyber Torres each collected three hits, while the top four batters in Detroit’s lineup tallied a total of nine hits. Dillon Dingler contributed his 12th home run of the season, extending the Tigers’ lead in the eighth inning.
With runners on the corners in the sixth inning, Kerry Carpenter made a crucial defensive play, leaping to grab Kyle Isbel’s drive at the top of the right-field fence. The highlight-reel catch preserved Detroit’s 4-3 lead and prevented the Royals from tying the game.
Seth Lugo has struggled since signing his recent two-year contract extension, capturing just one win in seven starts and posting an 8.35 ERA during that span.
The Tigers send Jack Flaherty (7-13, 4.87 ERA) to the mound for Saturday’s game, while the Royals will counter with Stephen Kolek (4-5, 4.18 ERA).
The Detroit Tigers showed resilience with a come-from-behind win over the Kansas City Royals, thanks to clutch hitting and a superb bullpen effort. Key defensive plays and strong performances from their lineup allowed Detroit to pull ahead and hold on for a 5-3 victory. The Royals’ playoff hopes take a hit as they continue to chase an American League wild card spot. Looking ahead, both teams aim to gain ground in their upcoming matchup.
