Arizona Diamondbacks News & Updates

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jose Herrera hit a two-run double in a four-run fourth inning, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks avoid a three-game sweep with a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Blaze Alexander added two hits, contributing to a productive day for the bottom of the Diamondbacks’ batting order just before the All-Star break. Alexander batted eighth and Herrera ninth for Arizona, which secured only its fourth win in the past 12 games.

Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly (8-5) navigated early control issues to pitch five innings, allowing just one run on one hit. He struck out six batters, but walked four, including two of the first three Angels hitters he faced.

Mike Trout drove in the lone run for the Angels, whose bid for a third home series sweep since the beginning of June fell short.

Los Angeles right-hander Jose Soriano (6-7) surrendered five runs over five innings, though only one was earned. He issued three walks.

The Angels initially took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Trout’s RBI single.

Arizona responded in the fourth inning, surging ahead 4-1. The rally included a game-tying grounder from Eugenio Suarez, an RBI double by Alexander, and Herrera’s crucial two-run double. Suarez capped the scoring with an RBI double in the fifth.

Key Moment

With runners on first and second and no outs for the Diamondbacks in the fourth inning, Angels third baseman Yoan Moncada misplayed Eugenio Suarez’s ground ball to his left. This error opened the door for the decisive four-run inning. Moncada, who has been dealing with knee soreness, was replaced defensively by Kevin Newman in the sixth inning.

Key Stat

Merrill Kelly holds a 5-1 record with a 2.67 ERA in his 11 starts immediately following an Arizona loss. Opponents have batted under .200 against him in those specific games.

Up Next

Both teams return to action Friday after the All-Star break. Arizona will host the St. Louis Cardinals, while Los Angeles will travel to Philadelphia.
