San Diego Padres News & Updates

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks extended their winning streak to four games with a 5-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night. Key contributions included home runs from Corbin Carroll and Josh Naylor. The win improved the Diamondbacks' record to 35-34, moving them above the .500 mark for the first time since May 23.

Ryne Nelson earned the win (3-2) for Arizona, pitching five innings and allowing only one unearned run despite some hard contact. He walked one and struck out three.

The Diamondbacks opened the scoring in the second inning when Josh Naylor hit his ninth homer on the first pitch from Padres starter Stephen Kolek. An RBI single by Geraldo Perdomo added another run in the third.

Arizona broke the game open in the fifth with a three-run rally. Corbin Carroll led off the inning with his 20th home run, an opposite-field shot to left-center. Naylor followed with a sacrifice fly, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. capped the scoring with an RBI single that ended Kolek's night.

The Padres had a chance to score in the second inning in an unusual sequence. With one out and runners at the corners, Elías Díaz struck out. Jake Cronenworth, running from first, drew a throw from catcher Gabriel Moreno that went into center field. Gavin Sheets appeared to score from third, but plate umpire Jansen Visconti was ruled to have interfered with Moreno's throw, sending the runners back to first and third. Nelson then retired the next batter to end the threat.

Key Moment

With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, the Diamondbacks took the lead for good. Corbin Carroll struck out, but reached base on a passed ball by Elías Díaz. Ketel Marte then walked, and Geraldo Perdomo followed with an RBI single to right field, scoring Carroll for the go-ahead run.

Key Stat

Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte extended his on-base streak to 25 games with a walk and a single. As of Friday, only Cleveland's José Ramírez and Kansas City's Vinnie Pasquantino had longer active streaks in MLB (both at 28 games).

Up Next

The series continues on Saturday. The San Diego Padres are scheduled to start Ryan Bergert (1-0, 1.26 ERA) against Arizona's Zac Gallen (4-8, 5.15 ERA).
