The Seattle Mariners continued their winning streak, notching a narrow 1-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. This impressive win marks Seattle’s eighth straight and puts them just a half-game behind the AL West-leading Houston Astros.
George Kirby delivered an outstanding performance, pitching seven innings and allowing just three hits. Kirby struck out seven Orioles and did not issue a walk, earning his eighth win of the season and keeping Baltimore’s offense quiet throughout the night.
After Kirby’s stellar start, Eduard Bazardo and Gabe Speier handled the eighth inning. Andrés Muñoz battled through a tense ninth to secure his 28th save in 34 chances, shutting the door on Baltimore’s hopes of a comeback.
The game’s only run came early, as Josh Naylor’s first-inning RBI single provided all the scoring Seattle needed. Naylor’s clutch hit was set up by Randy Arozarena, who led off with a single, stole second base, and crossed the plate for the decisive run.
Dean Kremer was the hard-luck loser for Baltimore, delivering eight strong innings and limiting the Mariners to just one run on five hits. Despite Kremer’s efforts, the Orioles were unable to provide any run support.
The Orioles had a chance to walk it off in the ninth, with the top of the order coming to bat. Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg were retired, but Gunnar Henderson drew a walk and Adley Rutschman singled. Ryan Mountcastle nearly delivered Baltimore’s first walk-off of the year, but his drive to left field missed the foul pole and he ultimately grounded out to end the game.
Cal Raleigh, Major League Baseball’s current home run leader, was held in check by Baltimore pitching, going 0-for-4 in the contest.
The Mariners capitalized quickly, going 1-for-2 with runners in scoring position, but that was all they needed thanks to their pitching dominance.
This shutout marks the Orioles’ 13th scoreless game of the season, their highest total since being shut out 15 times in 2018.
Seattle is set to send right-hander Logan Gilbert (3-4) to the mound for the next game, facing off against Baltimore's left-hander Trevor Rogers (5-2) as the series continues.
The Seattle Mariners extended their winning streak to eight games, securing a 1-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles behind a brilliant outing from George Kirby and a shutdown bullpen effort. Josh Naylor’s first-inning RBI proved decisive as Seattle moved within striking distance of the AL West lead. The Orioles were shut out for the 13th time this season despite a strong start from Dean Kremer and a late-game rally attempt. Next, the series continues as both teams look to gain ground in their respective divisions.
