Giancarlo Stanton delivered a standout performance with a 451-foot, two-run homer and five RBIs, leading the New York Yankees to a commanding 5-1 victory over the Washington Nationals. This win marks the Yankees' third consecutive triumph and keeps them just a half-game behind Boston for the American League's top wild-card spot.
Stanton’s home run in the sixth inning — a powerful shot off a slider from Orlando Ribalta — soared deep into the left field bleachers, securing his fifth homer in seven games and giving the Yankees a comfortable 5-1 lead. With this blast, Stanton reached 446 career home runs. He also cleared the bases with a double off the top of the left field fence in the third inning against Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore, lifting New York to a 3-1 lead.
This game marks Stanton’s first with at least five RBIs since May 12, 2022, and his eighth such game overall in his career — just one shy of his personal best.
Yankees pitcher Luis Gil improved to 2-1 on the season, allowing five hits and just one run over five innings of work. Despite walking four batters, he struck out five and limited the Nationals’ offense effectively in his third start since returning from a lat strain.
CJ Abrams contributed the only RBI for Washington with a single off Gil in the third inning. MacKenzie Gore, the Nationals’ starter, gave up three runs on three hits across five innings and dropped to 1-5 since the All-Star break as the Nationals suffered their fourth consecutive loss.
In a critical sequence, Gore allowed a double to Paul Goldschmidt and walks to Aaron Judge and Bellinger, setting up Stanton's bases-clearing double. Later, Tim Hill came in to retire Wood with the bases loaded, closing the sixth inning and preventing further damage.
Stanton continues to shine in clutch situations, batting an impressive .346 (17 for 49) with runners in scoring position this season.
Anthony Volpe returned to the Yankees lineup after a two-game absence but went 0-for-4 on the night.
The Yankees will send left-hander Max Fried (13-5, 3.14 ERA) to the mound in the next game against Nationals right-hander Cade Cavalli (1-0, 2.82 ERA).
The New York Yankees extended their winning streak with a 5-1 victory over the Washington Nationals, fueled by Giancarlo Stanton’s five-RBI performance and dominant pitching from Luis Gil. Stanton’s power at the plate and reliability with runners in scoring position have been instrumental in the Yankees’ playoff chase. The Nationals continue to struggle, dropping their fourth straight game as both teams prepare for the next matchup in the series.
