DENVER -- — Mike Yastrzemski delivered the go-ahead single in a dramatic four-run ninth inning, propelling the San Francisco Giants to a 6-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. The win marked the Giants' sixth consecutive triumph, remarkably all decided by one run.
Colorado's loss was their fourth straight, following their first three-game winning streak of the season. The Rockies dropped to a major league-worst 12-54 record.
Willy Adames and Casey Schmitt contributed home runs for the Giants.
Rockies pitchers Jake Bird, Seth Halvorsen, and Tyler Kinley had silenced the Giants lineup, retiring 12 consecutive batters, and Colorado held a comfortable 5-2 lead heading into the ninth. However, the Giants offense ignited against Zach Agnos (0-3). Casey Schmitt led off the inning with a home run, cutting the deficit. Heliot Ramos followed with a sacrifice fly, and Wilmer Flores drove in the tying run with a single before Mike Yastrzemski came through with the clutch go-ahead hit.
Erik Miller (3-0) entered the game with a runner on third and two outs in the eighth inning. He walked Mickey Moniak but escaped the jam by striking out Ryan Ritter, earning the win. Camilo Doval navigated a tense ninth inning, allowing two hits and a walk, but secured his 10th save in 13 opportunities. He induced Jordan Beck to ground into a 5-4-3 double play and retired Thairo Estrada on a fly out with runners at the corners to end the game.
Jung Hoo Lee started the game with a triple and Willy Adames brought him in with a sacrifice fly to give the Giants an early lead. Ryan Ritter singled in a run for Colorado, and Ryan McMahon and Kyle Farmer each hit solo home runs. Hunter Goodman and Doyle added triples in the Rockies' two-run eighth inning that extended their lead.
Despite the outcome of his plate appearance, Thairo Estrada battled in the ninth, fouling off three 0-2 pitches before ultimately flying out on a cutter, highlighting the tense nature of the final inning.
San Francisco now leads the major leagues with 17 one-run victories. They are the first team since the 1989 California Angels to win six consecutive games by a single run.
The second game of the three-game series is scheduled for Wednesday. Robbie Ray (8-1, 2.44 ERA) is expected to pitch for the Giants, facing off against Kyle Freeland (1-8, 5.19 ERA) for the Rockies.
