SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants secured their third straight win by defeating the Atlanta Braves 5-4 in 10 innings on Friday night. The game-winning run scored on a wild pitch thrown by Braves reliever Pierce Johnson with two outs in the extra frame.
Tyler Fitzgerald, who started the 10th inning on second base after being picked off to end the ninth, advanced to third on a groundout. He then scored when Johnson (1-2) unleashed a 1-2 pitch to the backstop, sealing the Giants' victory and sending the Braves to their fifth consecutive loss.
Spencer Bivens (2-2) earned the win for the Giants. He entered the game in the bottom of the 10th with the bases loaded and successfully retired Luke Williams on a groundout to end the threat.
Braves career saves leader Craig Kimbrel made his first appearance for Atlanta since the 2014 season, entering the game in the seventh inning. He gave up a leadoff single to Heliot Ramos but was aided when Sean Murphy threw out Ramos attempting to steal second, keeping the game tied at 4. Kimbrel then walked Jung Hoo Lee but picked him off first before striking out Wilmer Flores to escape the inning without allowing a run.
The Giants' offense, which has struggled recently, managed to score three runs in the first inning. These runs were facilitated by two errors committed by the Braves and a run-scoring wild pitch thrown by starter Spencer Schwellenbach.
San Francisco held a 4-2 lead until the seventh inning when Matt Olson hit a two-run homer off Giants reliever Ryan Walker, tying the game at 4.
An unusual moment occurred in the fourth inning when Sean Murphy hit a sacrifice fly for Atlanta with the bases loaded. Matt Olson easily scored from third base. However, there was confusion due to a ball being thrown onto the field by a fan. The umpires conferred but ultimately allowed the play and run to stand.
Both the Giants and the Braves played their 26th one-run game of the season, which is tied for the most in Major League Baseball. The Giants improved their record in one-run games to 14-12, while the Braves fell to 9-17 in such close contests.
The middle game of the series will feature Braves right-hander Bryce Elder (2-3, 4.56 ERA) taking the mound against Giants right-hander Logan Webb (5-5, 2.55 ERA).
