NEW YORK — Angel Martínez hit an early two-run homer, Luis Ortiz earned his first win since April 18, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the New York Yankees 4-0 on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.
Kyle Manzardo also went deep for the Guardians, who scored three times in the first inning and turned a trio of double plays. Ortiz (3-6) allowed three hits and struck out seven over 5 2/3 scoreless innings.
Martínez connected in the first inning off Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt’s seventh pitch. Daniel Schneeman, who finished the game with three hits, added an RBI double later in the inning, driving in José Ramírez, who had doubled earlier to extend his on-base streak to 30 games. These early runs helped the Guardians secure a rare win in the Bronx, just their third in their last 11 regular-season trips.
Manzardo padded the lead with a solo homer in the eighth inning.
Luis Ortiz ended a personal seven-game winless streak with his strong outing. He walked three and gave up just two hits, both to Aaron Judge, who ended the night batting .389.
The Guardians bullpen consisting of Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase finished the game, combining to allow just two hits over 3 1/3 innings and completing the five-hit shutout. This marked Cleveland’s first shutout at Yankee Stadium since August 9, 2014. Clase stranded two runners in the ninth by getting two strikeouts to seal the victory.
Clarke Schmidt (2-3) took the loss for New York, allowing three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked one. The Yankees were blanked for the second time this season.
José Ramírez’s 30-game on-base streak is the second-longest of his career, trailing only a 32-game run he had in 2018.
Angel Martínez’s early homer was a welcome sight, as he entered the game in a 6-for-40 slide.
The game began with a walk issued by Schmidt to Steven Kwan before Martínez hit his two-run blast immediately after.
In the seventh inning, Tim Herrin navigated trouble by getting Anthony Volpe to ground into a double play, ending the threat.
Cleveland will send RHP Slade Cecconi (1-1, 5.28 ERA) to the mound for the series finale on Thursday night. He will face Yankees LHP Max Fried (7-1, 1.92 ERA), who is coming off his first loss with the Yankees.
