The Cleveland Guardians secured a 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night, driven by a crucial two-run home run from Kyle Manzardo in the sixth inning and a dominant seven-inning performance from pitcher Gavin Williams.
With this win, the Guardians have captured the first two games in the series, tightening the gap to just three games behind the Mariners for the third and final American League wild-card spot. The Mariners, struggling on the road, have now lost seven consecutive away games and are 5-11 overall since August 13.
In the eighth inning, Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez blasted a two-run homer off Hunter Gaddis to bring the score to 4-3. Cleveland’s Cade Smith entered the game and efficiently retired all four batters he faced, notching his ninth save.
Williams improved his home record by scattering four hits and allowing one run over seven innings, striking out eight along the way. His only blemish was a home run by Jorge Polanco in the seventh inning.
Manzardo’s impactful two-run homer off Mariners starter Logan Gilbert extended the Guardians’ lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the seventh, Steven Kwan delivered an RBI single to restore Cleveland’s three-run cushion. Earlier, Bo Naylor got the scoring started with an RBI single that plated José Ramírez in the fourth inning.
Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who leads the majors with 50 home runs, went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
In a key defensive play, Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan made a diving catch in the sixth inning, robbing a potential extra-base hit and preventing Julio Rodríguez from scoring, preserving Cleveland’s narrow lead at that point.
Williams, who leads MLB with 73 walks, showed improved control against the Mariners, issuing just one walk to J.P. Crawford in the fifth inning. The right-hander has now made 10 consecutive starts without surrendering more than five hits.
The series finale will feature Mariners right-hander Bryce Miller (3-5, 5.98 ERA) against Guardians right-hander Tanner Bibee (9-10, 4.73 ERA) on Sunday.
The Cleveland Guardians took a vital step forward in their postseason chase with a narrow 4-3 win over the Seattle Mariners, highlighted by a two-run home run from Kyle Manzardo and a standout pitching performance from Gavin Williams. Clutch relief pitching and timely defense sealed the win, as the Guardians continue to close in on the Mariners in the AL wild-card race.
