The Cleveland Guardians rallied for a dramatic 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers, erasing what was once a 15 1/2-game deficit in the AL Central and moving into a tie for first place. The win capped a relentless charge by Cleveland, who have gone 17-5 in September and won 11 of their last 12 games.
Detroit’s ace Tarik Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, held Cleveland to just two hits through five innings. But the tide turned in a chaotic sixth. Steven Kwan led off with a bunt single, followed by another bunt from Angel Martinez. Skubal committed a costly error trying to throw to first between his legs. José Ramírez then drove in a run with a swinging bunt, and another scored on Skubal’s wild pitch.
The inning was marred by a frightening moment when Cleveland’s David Fry was hit in the face by a 99 mph fastball from Skubal as he squared to bunt. Fry was taken off the field and evaluated at Lutheran Medical Center. The incident visibly rattled Skubal, who also committed a balk in the inning.
Gabriel Arias added an RBI groundout, and pinch-hitter Daniel Schneemann extended the Guardians’ lead with a two-out RBI single in the seventh.
Gavin Williams was electric for Cleveland, matching a career high with 12 strikeouts over six innings. Cleveland’s pitching staff combined for a season-best 19 strikeouts, holding Detroit’s offense in check aside from a solo home run by Riley Greene.
Detroit’s grip on the division has slipped with their seventh consecutive loss and 10th defeat in the last 11 games, evaporating what was once a substantial lead.
After Fry exited due to injury, Skubal’s wild pitch on his first pitch to pinch-hitter George Valera allowed a critical run to score, helping the Guardians swing momentum in their favor during the pivotal sixth inning.
Cleveland hurlers recorded 19 strikeouts— their highest total this season.
The series continues as the Tigers send right-hander Jack Flaherty (8-14, 4.60 ERA) to the mound to face Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee (11-11, 4.34 ERA) on Wednesday.

The Guardians’ stunning comeback victory over the Tigers highlights their season-defining resilience, as they erased a monumental July deficit to seize a share of the AL Central lead. Key performances from Gavin Williams and a relentless small-ball offense propelled Cleveland to their 17th September win. With only a handful of games left and momentum surging, the division race is now wide open, making every matchup down the stretch critical for both squads.
