The Houston Astros surged past the Baltimore Orioles with a 10-7 victory on Friday night, powered by three-run home runs from Jeremy Peña and Christian Walker. The Astros capitalized on Orioles errors and clutch hitting to control the game, despite multiple comeback attempts by Baltimore.
Jeremy Peñaâs three-run homer to left field capped a four-run third inning for Houston, which was aided by two fielding errors from the Orioles. Christian Walker extended the Astrosâ advantage in the fifth, launching another three-run homer after Baltimore starter Cade Povich was pulled with two outs.
Colton Cowser provided a spark for Baltimore with a solo shot in the seventh, bringing the score to 7-6. Vimael MachÃn, making his first big league plate appearance since 2022, also homered in the eighth to keep the Orioles within striking distance. Despite these efforts, Baltimore couldnât overcome Houstonâs powerful lineup.
Steven Okert (2-2) earned the win in relief as the Astros weathered the absence of injured relievers Josh Hader and Bennett Sousa. While Houston had newly signed veteran reliever Craig Kimbrel in uniform, he did not appear in the game. Bryan Abreu struck out four in the final frame to secure his second save.
Victor Caratini, pinch-hitting for the Astros, hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to give Houston additional breathing room. A comebacker from Peña bounced off Baltimore reliever Corbin Martin for an RBI double, further extending the Astrosâ lead.
Rookie catcher Samuel Basallo, who agreed to an eight-year, $67 million contract with the Orioles before the game, entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh and made a key defensive play in the following inning. Houstonâs Lance McCullers Jr. returned from the injured list and allowed three runs over four innings of work.
A crucial play occurred in the eighth inning when Jeremiah Jackson nearly made a diving catch on Caratiniâs two-out hit. As the ball slipped past him in right field, two Astros runners scored, widening the Houston lead to 9-6.
The win improved the Astrosâ record to 15-8 in games started by left-handed opposing pitchers this season.
The series continues Saturday night with Cristian Javier (1-1) scheduled to start for Houston against Baltimoreâs Dean Kremer (9-9).
The Houston Astros continued their strong season, defeating the Baltimore Orioles 10-7 in a high-scoring contest marked by home runs, defensive miscues, and bullpen heroics. With powerful hitting from Peña and Walker, timely pitching, and key late-game moments, the Astros held off multiple Orioles rallies to maintain their lead in the AL West and improve against left-handed starting pitchers. The matchup highlighted rising stars, new roster moves, and an exciting display of offensive skill from both teams.
