The Houston Astros delivered an impressive performance against the Miami Marlins, securing an 8-2 victory on Monday night at LoanDepot Park. Jason Alexander led the way for Houston, pitching six scoreless innings and limiting the Marlins to just three hits. The right-hander struck out six and walked one, picking up his second win of the season.
After being held in check through the first three innings by Miami starter Sandy Alcantara, the Astros broke through in the fourth. Jeremy Peña started the rally with a leadoff double, immediately putting pressure on Alcantara. Jesús Sánchez, facing his former team for the first time since being traded to Houston, drove Peña home with a double. The Astros continued their offensive surge with a two-run double from Yainer Diaz, an RBI single from Carlos Correa, and a run-scoring fielder’s choice by Christian Walker.
By the end of the fourth inning, Houston had built a commanding 5-0 lead. Alcantara, who had been perfect through the first time in the order, surrendered six hits in the inning and allowed a total of nine hits and six runs across seven innings, throwing 100 pitches and striking out five.
The Astros extended their lead in the seventh, as Peña collected his second double of the game to drive in another run, making it 6-0. Houston’s bullpen faltered momentarily in the bottom half of the inning, as reliever Bryan King allowed back-to-back pinch-hit home runs to Javier Sanoja and Derek Hill, cutting the Astros’ lead to 6-2. Sanoja launched a 91 mph fastball 402 feet to left-center, followed by Hill’s left-field shot on a 1-2 sweeper.
Houston quickly responded in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Mauricio Dubón delivered an RBI double, and Cam Smith tacked on an RBI single, restoring the Astros’ five-run cushion at 8-2.
In the sixth inning, the Marlins threatened to score after loading the bases with two outs. Jason Alexander stood tall under pressure, inducing a groundout from Otto Lopez to keep Miami off the board and preserve Houston’s lead.
The Marlins saw their five-game winning streak come to an end with this defeat.
Miami will send right-hander Cal Quantrill (4-8, 4.79 ERA) to the mound for the next game of the series. The Astros have yet to announce their starting pitcher for Tuesday’s contest.
The Houston Astros asserted their dominance with a strong 8-2 win over the Miami Marlins, highlighted by Jason Alexander’s six shutout innings and a five-run outburst in the fourth. Houston’s balanced offensive attack and clutch pitching snapped Miami’s recent winning streak and set the tone for the rest of the series. Stay tuned as the matchup continues, with Miami turning to Cal Quantrill in the upcoming game.
