The Texas Rangers snapped their four-game losing streak with an exciting 7-6 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in extra innings on Monday night at Globe Life Field. Jake Burger provided the walk-off heroics, delivering a pinch-hit RBI single in the 10th inning to seal the game for Texas.
In the bottom of the 10th, Jake Burger lined a 99.4 mph pitch off the left-field wall, allowing Sam Haggerty, who began the inning as the automatic runner and advanced to third on a Marcus Semien flyout, to score the winning run. The clutch hit gave the Rangers a much-needed victory in front of their home crowd.
The Rangers rallied from an early 5-0 deficit after struggling starting pitching from Nathan Eovaldi. Arizona launched three home runs off Eovaldi, who had been dominant since the beginning of July. He finished with a no-decision, surrendering season highs of five runs and eight hits across five innings of work.
For Arizona, Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo each blasted two-run home runs in the third inning, following a solo shot from rookie Tyler Locklear in the second. Blaze Alexander added a solo homer in the sixth, giving the Diamondbacks a 6-1 lead and putting Texas on the ropes.
The Rangers responded with a furious rally. Corey Seager drove in a run with an RBI double, then added an RBI single before Wyatt Langford smashed his 16th home run of the season—a three-run blast—to bring Texas within one. Rowdy Tellez tied the game leading off the ninth with his 13th home run of the season. Tellez has now hit two home runs in 16 games since joining the Rangers.
Phil Maton (2-3) was outstanding out of the bullpen, retiring all three batters he faced in the 10th and earning his first win with Texas. Arizona’s Ryne Nelson struck out six without a walk during his 5 1/3 innings on the mound.
The Rangers improved to 7-5 in extra-inning games this season, including a 5-3 mark at home, while the Diamondbacks fell to 4-9 in extras.
The middle game of this three-game set is set for Tuesday night. Rangers rookie Jack Leiter (7-6, 4.05 ERA) will take the mound against Arizona’s Anthony DeSclafani (1-2, 4.20 ERA).
The Texas Rangers staged a dramatic comeback and secured a 7-6 walk-off win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, ending their four-game losing streak.
