James McCann powered the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins, homering and driving in four runs to highlight an action-packed game at Target Field. The win keeps Arizona in the thick of the National League wild-card race as they continue to chase a postseason spot.
Alek Thomas delivered on both sides of the ball for Arizona, recording two hits, stealing a base, and scoring twice. The Diamondbacks took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when McCann’s clutch two-out single brought Thomas home.
Minnesota answered in the bottom half of the second, capitalizing on two errors from Arizona third baseman Jordan Lawlar to plate two unearned runs. However, the Diamondbacks quickly regained momentum in the fourth inning. After Bailey Ober struck out Thomas for the second out, McCann sent the next pitch deep over the left-field wall for a three-run homer, giving Arizona a 4-2 advantage.
Nabil Crismatt improved to 3-0 by allowing just two unearned runs across five innings for the Diamondbacks, striking out four and walking none. Kyle Backhus shut the door with the bases loaded in the ninth, inducing a fly out from Matt Wallner to secure his second save.
For the Twins, Bailey Ober struck out nine but allowed four earned runs over six innings. Minnesota’s bullpen woes continued, with their relievers having surrendered 42 earned runs in their last 10 home games, totaling a 10.22 ERA over 37 innings.
Matt Wallner and Mickey Gasper each provided solo home runs for Minnesota but the offense could not overcome Arizona’s four-run rally, ultimately coming up short in their effort to avoid a series sweep.
The Minnesota Twins will open a three-game home series against the New York Yankees, with Simeon Woods Richardson (6-4, 4.58 ERA) set to take the mound. The Arizona Diamondbacks return home to face the San Francisco Giants in a three-game set, sending Zac Gallen (11-14, 4.84 ERA) to the hill for the opener.
The Arizona Diamondbacks secured a crucial 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins, propelled by James McCann’s power at the plate, solid pitching from Nabil Crismatt, and timely defense. The Twins showcased their home run hitters but continued to struggle with bullpen reliability. As both teams look forward to key upcoming series, the Diamondbacks maintain their pursuit of an NL wild-card berth, while Minnesota aims to regroup against the Yankees.
