The Los Angeles Angels surged past the Oakland Athletics 11-5 on Sunday afternoon, overcoming a late-inning tie and exploding for six runs in the tenth inning. The dramatic win helped the Angels avoid a three-game sweep on the road.
Jo Adell made an immediate impact, crushing a three-run homer in the first inning—his 26th of the season, a new career high. He later sparked the Angels' huge tenth inning with an RBI single that broke a 5-5 tie. Adell finished the game with multiple key contributions, fueling Los Angeles’s offense from start to finish.
In the tenth, automatic runner Mike Trout advanced to third on a passed ball before Taylor Ward walked. Adell then singled to center, putting the Angels ahead 6-5. Christian Moore tallied his third RBI of the game with a groundout, followed by Luis Rengifo’s two-run triple. Bryce Teodosio added a sacrifice fly and Zach Neto capped the onslaught with a 436-foot two-run homer, his 21st of the year. The six-run frame snatched the game decisively in favor of Los Angeles.
Oakland’s offense showed power of its own, with rookie Nick Kurtz clubbing his 25th home run in the third and Shea Langeliers immediately following with his 26th. Lawrence Butler’s 17th homer narrowed the deficit in the sixth, while Luis Urías delivered a clutch two-out RBI single to tie the game late before extra innings.
Veteran reliever Kenley Jansen delivered in the clutch for the Angels, pitching a scoreless ninth and striking out two. With those strikeouts, Jansen moved into fourth place all-time for strikeouts by a reliever in MLB history, surpassing Craig Kimbrel and raising his career total to 1,268. Only Hoyt Wilhelm, Rich Gossage, and Aroldis Chapman have more than the 37-year-old Jansen.
In the ninth inning, Jansen loaded the bases with two outs but induced a foul pop-out from Lawrence Butler on a first-pitch cutter, preserving the tie and sending the game to extras.
Kenley Jansen now ranks fourth all-time among MLB relievers with 1,268 career strikeouts, passing Craig Kimbrel on the list.
The Angels return home to host the Cincinnati Reds in a three-game series starting Monday, with Victor Mederos (0-0, 5.63 ERA) expected to start the opener.
The Athletics head to Minnesota, where Jacob Lopez (6-6, 3.30 ERA) is scheduled to pitch the series opener against the Twins on Tuesday night.
The Los Angeles Angels overcame the Oakland Athletics with an explosive six-run 10th inning, highlighted by Jo Adell’s home run and late heroics. Kenley Jansen achieved a significant career milestone, moving to fourth all-time on the reliever strikeout list. Los Angeles’s power and timely hitting allowed them to avoid a sweep and build momentum heading into their series against Cincinnati. The A’s, who showed plenty of power themselves, look to bounce back in their upcoming series in Minnesota.
