Joc Pederson delivered in the clutch with a walk-off RBI double, leading the Texas Rangers to a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Friday night in Arlington.
After trailing in the late innings, the Rangers mounted a ninth-inning rally. Wyatt Langford, who had already hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, sparked the comeback with an aggressive double to begin the ninth. Corey Seager drove in Langford with a single to tie the game at 3-3. Moments later, Joc Pederson roped a double to bring home the winning run, capping Texasâ thrilling finish.
The Guardians had taken a 3-2 lead in the eighth with Carlos Ramirezâs two-run double, but could not hold off Texas in the final frame.
Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi was dominant, pitching seven innings of one-run ball with nine strikeouts. Eovaldiâs outing propelled him to the top of the leagueâs qualified ERA rankings, as he finished the game with a 1.73 ERA over 130 inningsâsurpassing Pittsburghâs Paul Skenes.
Eovaldi allowed doubles in the first and two in the second inningâincluding an RBI double from Clevelandâs C.J. Kayfus. After that, the veteran right-hander retired 15 consecutive batters.
For the Rangers, reliever Robert Garcia (2-7) secured the win with one inning in relief. Guardians reliever Cade Smith (5-5) was saddled with the loss and a blown save.
Rowdy Tellez kicked off Texasâs scoring in the fourth with a solo home run to left field, tying the game at 1-1. Wyatt Langford gave the Rangers their first lead in the sixth with his 19th home run of the season.
The pivotal play came when Langford hustled for a double to open the ninth, putting himself in scoring position and setting up Seagerâs game-tying single and Pedersonâs walk-off heroics.
Nathan Eovaldi reached the benchmark of 130 innings pitched, taking the MLB lead in ERA among qualified starters. To remain qualified, he will need to complete 162 innings by seasonâs end.
The Rangers send Jack Leiter (7-7, 4.06 ERA) to the mound in the next game, facing off against Guardians left-hander Logan Allen (7-9, 3.87 ERA).
