Jordan Walker’s dramatic two-run double capped off a thrilling three-run ninth inning for the St. Louis Cardinals, securing a 3-2 comeback victory over the San Francisco Giants at Busch Stadium.
Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals mounted a rally against Giants reliever Ryan Walker. After Nolan Gorman and Masyn Wynn singled, Walker hit Jimmy Crooks to load the bases. Thomas Saggese’s single brought home Gorman, cutting the deficit in half. Jordan Walker then delivered the decisive blow, driving a two-run double to left field and giving St. Louis a stunning walk-off win.
Ryan Walker suffered his sixth blown save of the season in the loss. Riley O'Brien pitched a scoreless inning for the Cardinals to earn his fourth victory of the year.
Justin Verlander delivered a vintage performance for San Francisco, throwing six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Verlander’s outing was a milestone as he passed Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry on the all-time strikeout list, moving into eighth place with 3,536 career punchouts.
Cardinals starter Andre Pallante went toe-to-toe with Verlander, surrendering two runs on five hits across six innings and keeping his team within striking distance.
San Francisco broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Dominic Smith scored on Casey Schmitt’s sacrifice fly, and Drew Gilbert added an RBI double, plating Matt Chapman. Despite building a 2-0 lead, the Giants were unable to add insurance runs.
During the fifth inning, with two runners on and one out, Victor Scott II tried to steal third base for St. Louis but was thrown out by Giants catcher Patrick Bailey. Justin Verlander then induced a groundout from Lars Nootbaar, preserving the Giants' lead at that time and ending the Cardinals' scoring chance.
The Giants’ offense failed to hit a home run, halting their stretch of 18 consecutive games with at least one long ball. This run fell just short of the franchise record of 19 straight games with a homer, set in 1947.
Jung Hoo Lee, Dominic Smith, and Matt Chapman each collected two hits for the Giants. On the Cardinals’ side, Walker provided the game’s biggest hit, while Saggese and Gorman also contributed key hits during the decisive ninth-inning rally.
St. Louis will hand the ball to right-hander Sonny Gray (12-8) as they wrap up the series on Sunday. The Giants have yet to announce their starting pitcher for the finale.
The St. Louis Cardinals overcame a late deficit to defeat the San Francisco Giants 3-2, thanks to Jordan Walker's clutch ninth-inning double. Despite a stellar outing from Giants ace Justin Verlander, who moved up the all-time strikeout list, the Cardinals capitalized on late opportunities to secure the win. The Giants' home run streak ended at 18 games, one shy of the franchise record. Both teams look forward to the series finale, with St. Louis aiming to build on this momentum.
