Josh Lowe led the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-1 victory against the Washington Nationals by homering twice and driving in all four of Tampa Bay’s runs. Ryan Pepiot delivered a stellar performance on the mound, pitching five scoreless innings as the Rays executed a strong win on the road.
Josh Lowe had an outstanding game, recording his third career multi-homer performance and his first of the season. Lowe’s bat came alive early, breaking the game open with a three-run homer in the first inning following singles from Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero. He homered again in the fourth, pushing Tampa Bay’s lead to 4-0.
Ryan Pepiot improved to 10-10 on the season by keeping the Nationals scoreless through five innings of work. Pepiot controlled the game, allowing only one baserunner in each of the first four innings, but not letting anyone advance past second base. The right-hander struck out six and walked three, holding down the Nationals’ offense. Bryan Baker closed out the ninth inning to secure his third save of the year and his first for Tampa Bay.
The Nationals’ offensive woes persisted, marking their seventh straight loss. James Wood provided their only highlight with an RBI single and a walk. Washington has been outscored 24-5 in its last four games, highlighting their recent struggles at the plate.
Nationals starter Jake Irvin (8-10) was tagged for three runs in the first inning, raising his season ERA in the first frame to 9.96. However, Irvin steadied his performance and allowed just one additional run over the next five innings.
The game saw two brief delays. In the third inning, a young fan ran toward the Nationals’ dugout, and in the seventh, another fan entered the field from the left field seats to stand next to Rays’ shortstop Carson Williams. Both interruptions were quickly resolved without incident.
With runners at first and third and no outs in the eighth, Rays reliever Griffin Jax took over from Mason Englert. Jax struck out CJ Abrams and Paul DeJong, walked Josh Bell, and ended the threat when Junior Caminero made a barehanded play at third base to retire Riley Adams.
The Rays’ pitching staff has been dominant, surrendering only 11 total runs (nine earned) across their past six games, resulting in a 1.51 ERA over 53 2/3 innings. During that stretch, they have given up just four extra-base hits—three doubles and one home run.
The series continues with Rays left-hander Ian Seymour (2-0, 3.18 ERA) taking the mound against Nationals right-hander Brad Lord (4-7, 3.84 ERA) on Sunday.
The Tampa Bay Rays showcased strong pitching and timely hitting, particularly from Josh Lowe, to defeat the Washington Nationals 4-1. With continued struggles from the Nationals’ offense and recent excellence from the Rays’ pitching staff, Tampa Bay continues to build momentum in the MLB season.
