Josh Naylor delivered a clutch, two-out bases-clearing double in the eighth inning to propel the Seattle Mariners to a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over the Colorado Rockies at T-Mobile Park. This pivotal win clinched the Mariners’ second postseason berth since 2001, marking their 15th win in the last 16 games and keeping the chase for the AL West title alive.
The Mariners (88-69) entered the contest needing both a win and a New York Yankees victory over the Chicago White Sox to secure their playoff spot. While the Yankees handled their part, Seattle had to battle from behind. Trailing 3-1 through seven innings and managing just three hits in the game, the Mariners appeared in jeopardy until late-inning heroics shifted the narrative.
In the bottom of the eighth, Seattle loaded the bases as Rockies reliever Juan Mejia hit two batters and walked another. Josh Naylor stepped up and ripped a 2-0 fastball from Victor Vodnik into the left-center gap, clearing the bases and giving the Mariners a 4-3 lead with one swing.
Mariners reliever Gabe Speier pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win, and closer Andres Munoz sealed the victory with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning, locking down his 38th save of the year.
On the mound for the Rockies, right-hander McCade Brown made just his sixth career start but was sensational, allowing only one run on two hits over five innings while recording a personal-best 10 strikeouts. Brown entered the game with just 11 career Ks, more than doubling that total in a single outing. It was only the second double-digit strikeout performance by a Rockies pitcher this season.
Dominic Canzone provided some pop for Seattle with his 11th home run of the campaign, a solo shot in the fifth inning. The Mariners have been dominant at home since the All-Star break, boasting a league-best 24-6 record at T-Mobile Park in the second half.
The Rockies will send right-hander Tanner Gordon (6-7, 6.00 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday as they take on Mariners’ ace Luis Castillo (10-8, 3.63 ERA) in the quest to further improve their playoff positioning and potentially clinch the AL West.
The Seattle Mariners staged a late comeback to defeat the Colorado Rockies, 4-3, securing their second trip to the MLB postseason since 2001. Josh Naylor's decisive eighth-inning double was the game-changer, while Dominic Canzone’s homer and a series of strong pitching performances fueled Seattle’s impressive run. With the postseason spot now secured, Seattle looks to carry its strong home momentum as the race for the AL West continues.
