Jonathan India delivered a pivotal three-run homer and Michael Wacha turned in a strong pitching performance as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Boston Red Sox 7-3, snapping Boston’s seven-game winning streak at Fenway Park on Wednesday night.
Michael Wacha improved his record to 6-9 with an outstanding outing, limiting the Red Sox to five hits and two runs over six innings. He didn’t issue a walk while striking out three batters, securing his second consecutive win and helping the Royals avoid a three-game sweep on the road.
The Red Sox jumped to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but Kansas City answered in the fourth with a two-run single from Kyle Isbel to take the lead. In the seventh, Jonathan India extended the Royals' advantage with a three-run blast, cementing a comfortable margin for the visitors.
Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony, who recently signed a contract extension worth at least $130 million through 2033, went 0-for-4 in the game. His best attempt came in the fifth inning with a deep fly ball measured at 394 feet, but Royals right fielder Randal Grichuk made a leaping catch at the wall to deny extra bases.
The Royals threatened in the sixth inning with runners on first and second as Randal Grichuk drove a ball deep to center. Jarren Duran made the catch and Ceddanne Rafaela fired a relay to first in an effort to double up John Rave. However, with no one covering the bag, both runners advanced to scoring position, but Kansas City was unable to capitalize and left them stranded.
Boston’s Dustin May made his Red Sox debut after a recent trade. May pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks, while collecting four strikeouts in a challenging outing.
The Royals get a day off before starting a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins. Seth Lugo (8-5) is slated to start for Kansas City, facing Minnesota’s Joe Ryan (10-5) in the opener.
The Red Sox also have Thursday off before traveling to San Diego for a three-game set against the Padres. Boston’s expected pitching rotation includes Walker Buehler (6-6), Lucas Giolito (8-2), and Brayan Bello (8-5).
The Kansas City Royals snapped the Boston Red Sox’s seven-game win streak with a 7-3 win, powered by Jonathan India’s three-run homer and Michael Wacha’s strong pitching. Boston’s new star Roman Anthony went hitless, and Dustin May struggled in his first start with the Red Sox. Both teams now look ahead to important upcoming series as the playoff race continues.
