The Philadelphia Phillies extended their winning streak to four games with a dramatic 4-1 comeback victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park. NL East leaders, the Phillies were powered by Kyle Schwarber’s 42nd home run of the season, a two-run blast that capped a four-run rally in the eighth inning.
Kyle Schwarber’s homer, his 42nd of the year, propelled him past Shohei Ohtani for the National League lead. With 97 runs batted in on the season, Schwarber continues to anchor Philadelphia’s offense, trailing only Cal Raleigh’s 45 home runs for the overall MLB lead.
Reds starter Andrew Abbott (8-3) was sharp, limiting the Phillies to just three hits through seven innings and retiring the first twelve batters he faced. His lone blemish early came in the fifth, allowing a leadoff double to J.T. Realmuto. But the Phillies were unable to score until the eighth inning.
With two outs in the eighth, Weston Wilson and Trea Turner delivered back-to-back RBI doubles, tying and then giving the Phillies the lead. Schwarber followed with his two-run homer off Reds reliever Tony Santillan, pushing the game out of reach and completing the Phillies’ late rally.
Cincinnati struck early when TJ Friedl doubled in the first and scored on a single by Gavin Lux. That run was the only blemish against Phillies starter Taijuan Walker, who pitched six strong innings.
Orion Kerkering shut the door in the ninth, retiring the Reds in order to collect his third save of the year out of seven opportunities. Jordan Romano (2-4) picked up the win for Philadelphia, which now leads the idle New York Mets by six games in the NL East.
With one out in the seventh inning, Reds right fielder Noelvi Marte kept the game in Cincinnati’s favor at the time by throwing out Bryce Harper at home plate as he attempted to score on a Nick Castellanos fly ball, preventing the tying run from crossing.
Kyle Schwarber, an Ohio native, has now hit 13 career home runs at Great American Ball Park, the most he’s logged at any road stadium during his career.
The series continues Tuesday as Phillies left-hander Ranger Suárez (8-5, 2.94 ERA) faces Reds right-hander Brady Singer (9-9, 5.43 ERA).
The Philadelphia Phillies delivered a late rally, highlighted by Kyle Schwarber’s league-leading 42nd home run, to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1. Strong outings by both starting pitchers kept the game close until Philadelphia’s lineup broke through in the eighth. The victory solidifies the Phillies’ position atop the NL East and showcases their ability to come back late against tough competition. Expect more key matchups as the series continues between these two competitive clubs.
