The Philadelphia Phillies powered past the Washington Nationals 6-2 on Friday night, snapping a three-game losing streak. Kyle Schwarber delivered his 43rd home run of the season, a decisive tiebreaking three-run blast in the seventh inning that broke open the game at Nationals Park.
Schwarber's seventh-inning homer, a massive 456-foot shot to right field, put the Phillies ahead for good. Immediately following Schwarber, Bryce Harper launched a homer over the center-field fence, marking the sixth time this season that Philadelphia hitters have gone back-to-back. Both former Nationals players were met with cheers from a heavily pro-Philly crowd of 35,143. Schwarber even received "M-V-P!" chants during his ninth-inning plate appearance.
Philadelphia starter Zack Wheeler was limited to five innings for the second straight game, giving up two runs on four hits, including a home run to Nationals rookie Daylen Lile. Tanner Banks (4-2) threw a scoreless sixth inning and ultimately got credit for the win. Phillies closer Jhoan Duran entered in a non-save scenario in the ninth, but left the field limping after taking a hard ground ball off his right foot and required assistance from trainers and the bullpen cart.
Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore delivered a solid performance after an early RBI double from Harper, and showed emotion by striking out Harrison Bader to end the sixth inning. However, Philadelphia capitalized against Washington’s inexperienced bullpen in the seventh: Clayton Beeter (0-2) walked two batters, then Konnor Pilkington surrendered Schwarber’s crushing home run on a hanging slider.
In the fifth, Nationals catcher Riley Adams surprised everyone by stealing his first base of the year after a leadoff walk. Zack Wheeler recovered quickly, retiring the next three batters to keep the game tied at two runs apiece.
After struggling to a 13.12 ERA in four starts post-All-Star break, MacKenzie Gore has rebounded recently, posting a 1.50 ERA in his last two outings.
Saturday’s matchup will feature veteran Phillies right-hander Taijuan Walker (4-5, 3.39 ERA) against Nationals starter Cade Cavalli (0-0, 3.86 ERA), who will be making his third start of the season.
The Phillies ended their losing streak with timely home runs from Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, buoyed by strong bullpen work and key plays in the field. Philadelphia's bats capitalized on the Nationals’ bullpen in a crucial seventh inning, while Washington missed opportunities despite a solid outing from MacKenzie Gore. This win keeps the Phillies atop the NL East and underscores the power in the heart of their batting order as they head deeper into the season.
