The Minnesota Twins clinched a dramatic 5-3 walk-off victory against the Kansas City Royals in an 11-inning thriller on Sunday. The highlight came from rookie Luke Keaschall, who delivered a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, marking Minnesota’s ninth walk-off win of the season.
Luke Keaschall continued his impressive start to his Major League career, collecting three hits on the day and extending his on-base streak to 12 games. His game-winning homer came off Royals closer Carlos Estévez, sending the Twins faithful into celebration as the ball cleared the right-centerfield wall.
Ryan Fitzgerald, playing in just his fourth big league game at 31 years old, smashed a third-inning slider over the right field wall for his first MLB hit and home run, giving Minnesota a 2-1 lead early in the game.
The Royals pulled ahead in the seventh inning, courtesy of Vinnie Pasquantino’s 20th home run of the year, putting Kansas City up 3-2. However, the Twins answered back in the bottom of the eighth as Ryan Jeffers drove in Austin Martin, who reached third base on a triple after a misplayed ball by left fielder John Rave.
Michael Tonkin became the seventh pitcher of the game for the Twins, throwing scoreless 10th and 11th innings to earn his first win since July 30, 2024. Carlos Estévez took the loss for the Royals after allowing Keaschall’s walk-off homer.
Adam Frazier led the Royals with four hits, while Maikel Garcia contributed three more. Despite their efforts, Kansas City struggled with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-15 and stranding 15 base runners. Frazier narrowly missed a five-hit game, flying out with the bases loaded in the ninth.
The Royals lost for just the fourth time in their last 50 games when leading after seven innings. Conversely, Minnesota notched only its third win this season in games where they trailed after seven.
The Royals send left-hander Bailey Falter (7-6, 4.14 ERA) to the mound against Nationals’ right-hander Cade Cavalli (0-0, 0.00) on Monday. For the Twins, right-hander Zebby Matthews (3-3, 5.17 ERA) will face off against Yankees righty Will Warren (6-5, 4.44 ERA).
The Minnesota Twins staged a comeback to defeat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 in 11 innings, capped by Luke Keaschall's walk-off homer. Ryan Fitzgerald made his mark with a home run for his first career hit, while Michael Tonkin secured the win in relief. The Royals’ struggles with runners in scoring position ultimately proved costly in this tightly contested MLB matchup. This game showcased clutch performances, key milestones, and will be remembered for its late-inning drama and standout rookie contributions.
