DETROIT -- Jorge Polanco and Cole Young hit back-to-back home runs in a four-run ninth inning as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Detroit Tigers 8-4 on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep.
Julio Rodriguez, Randy Arozarena and Mitch Garver also contributed solo home runs for the Mariners. Seattle's dominant performance in the series included earlier wins of 12-3 and 15-7 against the major league-leading Tigers.
The Mariners scored a total of 35 runs in the series, their most in a three-game set since 2002.
The Detroit Tigers concluded the series on a season-high four-game losing streak heading into the All-Star break.
After Polanco's homer broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth inning and Young's home run provided a two-run lead, the Mariners added two more runs in the inning.
Matt Brash earned the win, improving his record to 1-0 after striking out two batters in the eighth inning.
Tommy Kahnle took the loss (1-2), allowing three runs on two hits and a walk without recording an out in the decisive ninth inning.
Detroit initially scored two unearned runs off Logan Gilbert in the first inning, capitalizing on a throwing error by Luke Raley. The Tigers later regained the lead in the seventh inning on Riley Greene's 24th home run of the season.
Seattle's Cal Raleigh finished the game 0 for 2 with three walks. His 38 home runs before the All-Star Game stand as an American League record and place him one shy of Barry Bonds' 2001 major league record for homers before the break. Raleigh also stole a base in the game, joining Babe Ruth (1921), Reggie Jackson (1969), and Ken Griffey Jr. (1998) as players with at least 38 home runs and 10 stolen bases in their team's first 96 games.
The pivotal moment came when Jorge Polanco, pinch-hitting to lead off the ninth inning, launched a 401-foot home run to right field, breaking the tie.
Cal Raleigh is the first catcher to lead the majors outright in home runs at the All-Star break since Hall of Famer Johnny Bench achieved the feat in 1972.
The Detroit Tigers are sending a franchise-record six players to the All-Star Game in Atlanta, including starting pitcher Tarik Skubal. The Seattle Mariners will send five All-Stars to the Midsummer Classic, their largest contingent since 2003.
