The Atlanta Braves topped the Washington Nationals 6-3 in the first game of their split doubleheader, capitalizing on a dominant fourth inning and impressive performances from key players.
Matt Olson homered for the fourth straight game, joining Jurickson Profar to deliver back-to-back home runs in a critical five-run fourth inning. Olson's homer was his 27th of the season, marking a hot streak where he’s batting .556 (10-for-18) with four home runs, three doubles, seven RBIs, and seven runs over his last four games. Olson also added a double on the day.
Profar's two-run shot to right field gave the Braves the lead for good and marked his 14th home run of the year. Atlanta finished the game with 13 total hits and extended its winning streak to three games following a previous four-game skid.
Making his first start for the Braves, José Suarez (2-0) impressed on the mound by going seven innings and allowing only two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. Closer Raisel Iglesias pitched a scoreless ninth inning, earning his 26th save of the season.
Vidal Bruján contributed two hits and drove in two runs for Atlanta. Michael Harris II and Ronald Acuña Jr. each recorded three singles, bolstering the Braves’ offense.
For the Nationals, left fielder Daylen Lile hit his 10th triple of the season in the eighth inning, setting a new franchise rookie record since the team's move to Washington in 2005, surpassing Bryce Harper's previous mark from 2012.
The fourth inning proved pivotal as Profar and Olson launched back-to-back home runs, marking Atlanta's eighth such occurrence this season and their first since August 7. This offensive surge put the Braves ahead and out of reach for the Nationals.
Nationals starter Jake Irvin (8-13) gave up the crucial home runs in the fourth and has struggled in recent starts, currently 0-8 with a 9.00 ERA over his last nine outings.
In the series finale later on Tuesday, the Braves are set to start right-hander Hurston Waldrep (4-1, 2.78 ERA), while the Nationals counter with right-hander Brad Lord (5-8, 4.21 ERA).
The Atlanta Braves continued their strong play with a 6-3 win over the Washington Nationals, fueled by back-to-back home runs from Matt Olson and Jurickson Profar and a standout pitching debut from José Suarez. The victory marks Atlanta's third consecutive win, while Matt Olson extends his personal home run streak to four games. The Nationals' Daylen Lile made history with his record-setting 10th triple as a rookie. The two teams will face off again in the series finale.
