Otto Lopez delivered a standout performance with three hits, an RBI, and a run scored as the Miami Marlins continued their winning streak, defeating the Texas Rangers 4-2 on Sunday. Both teams remain in the playoff race, but face slim odds with just six games left in the regular season.
Wyatt Langford recorded his 22nd home run for the Rangers, who extended their losing streak to seven games—marking their longest skid this season. Texas, with a 79-77 record, fell 5.5 games behind Houston for the final American League wild card spot. The Astros, holding the tiebreaker over Texas, were set to face AL West-leading Seattle later Sunday night.
The Marlins (76-80) seized the lead in the fourth inning. Otto Lopez doubled for an RBI and later scored on Heriberto Hernández's single off Merrill Kelly (12-9). In the fifth, Jakob Marsee and Agustín Ramírez hit back-to-back doubles, stretching Miami’s advantage to 3-0.
Miami, trailing current wild card contenders New York Mets and Cincinnati by four games, kept their slim postseason hopes alive. The Mets and Reds were tied at 80-76 for the final National League wild card slot.
Lake Bachar (8-2) earned the win after pitching two strong innings in relief of Eury Pérez. The 22-year-old Pérez struck out nine—a season high—across four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk over 88 pitches. George Soriano picked up his first save by closing out the ninth inning.
After Texas narrowed the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth, the Marlins responded swiftly. Graham Pauley led off the seventh with a triple to deep center, and Brian Navarreto followed with a sacrifice fly, restoring a two-run cushion for Miami at 4-2.
The Marlins have now won 10 of their last 11 games, and their 76-win total is already 14 wins better than their previous season tally.
Both clubs have Monday off before returning to action Tuesday night. Miami travels to face the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies, while Texas hosts the Minnesota Twins.
The Miami Marlins showcased strong offense and pitching to notch a 4-2 win over the Texas Rangers, extending their winning streak to six games. Otto Lopez was a key contributor at the plate, while the pitching staff, led by Eury Pérez and Lake Bachar, held off the Rangers’ attempts at a comeback. Despite both teams being mathematically alive in the playoff race, their postseason hopes remain distant. The Marlins’ hot streak and improved season record highlight their late push, while the Rangers look to rebound after their longest losing streak of the year.
