The Miami Marlins staged a dramatic comeback to defeat the Washington Nationals 8-3, overcoming an early three-run deficit with strong performances both at the plate and on the mound.
Washington took an early 3-0 lead with key RBIs from Robert Hassell III in the third inning, followed by run-scoring hits from Daylen Lile and Luis Garcia Jr. in the sixth. The Nationals seemed in control until the bottom of the sixth.
Miami’s pivotal rally began in the sixth inning. Jakob Marsee kicked things off with one of his four hits, with Otto Lopez and Agustin Ramirez joining in to drive in runs. Eric Wagaman delivered the go-ahead RBI single, giving the Marlins a 4-3 advantage. Lopez added another RBI in the seventh, and Xavier Edwards sealed the game with a three-run homer in the eighth, marking his third home run of the season.
Marlins starter Eury Perez pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out seven. Lake Bachar earned the victory after recording two outs in relief. Nationals starter Jake Irvin took the loss, dropping his record to 8-12.
Tension flared in the sixth inning after a disputed tag play at second base. Initially ruled out, Jakub Marsee was deemed safe after the umpires conferred, and a challenge by Washington upheld the safe call. Nationals interim manager Miguel Cairo was ejected for arguing, followed by Irvin’s ejection after his removal from the game.
A costly error by CJ Abrams opened the door for the Marlins’ sixth-inning rally, shifting momentum in Miami’s favor.
Xavier Edwards and Jakob Marsee led the Marlins’ lineup, combining for seven hits in the top spots of the order.
The Nationals will send MacKenzie Gore (5-13, 4.15 ERA) to the mound as he returns from the injured list to face the Marlins’ Ryan Weathers (1-1, 3.28 ERA) in the next game of the series.
The Miami Marlins showcased resilience by overturning a three-run deficit and capitalizing on key errors and clutch hits to top the Washington Nationals. Standout performances from Xavier Edwards and Jakob Marsee fueled the offense, while a critical sixth-inning rally, combined with strong relief pitching, secured the Marlins’ victory. The win positions Miami favorably as the series continues, while Washington looks to regroup in the next matchup.
