Michael Harris II delivered an outstanding performance with two home runs, while Hurston Waldrep pitched six strong innings as the Atlanta Braves secured a 3-2 win against the Washington Nationals. This victory marked Atlanta's 10th consecutive win and added to their dominance over the Nationals this season.
Six of Atlanta's ten recent wins have come against the last-place Nationals, including the Braves’ first four-game sweep of the Washington/Montreal franchise earlier in September. However, despite their impressive winning streak, the Braves (75-83) have already been eliminated from playoff contention.
Hurston Waldrep improved his record to 6-1 by allowing just one run on five hits, with four walks and five strikeouts over six innings. Raisel Iglesias came in to close out the ninth inning and earned his 28th save of the season, keeping the Nationals at bay in the final frame.
Michael Harris II hit a towering 444-foot home run to right-center in the fifth inning, followed by a leadoff homer in the seventh that increased Atlanta’s lead to 3-1. Ronald Acuña Jr. also contributed with a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning, swinging the momentum in favor of the Braves.
For the Nationals, Brad Lord pitched six innings, conceding two runs on four hits. The Nationals took an early lead in the third inning when Nasim Nuñez walked, stole second base, and scored on a single by CJ Abrams. James Wood later added to Washington’s offense with his 38th double, followed by a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning.
Ha-Seong Kim saw his hitting streak end at 10 games, along with a nine-game run-scoring streak, which was the longest for a Braves player since 2023. Waldrep’s .857 win percentage is the highest by a rookie in franchise history (since 1900) with at least 10 appearances.
With two outs in the sixth inning, Ronald Acuña Jr. hit the first pitch he saw—a slider—over the right-center field wall, giving Atlanta a pivotal 2-1 lead.
Washington’s Andrew Alvarez (1-1, 2.84 ERA) is scheduled to start Wednesday's series finale against Atlanta’s Bryce Elder (8-10, 5.36 ERA).
The Atlanta Braves claimed a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals, powered by Michael Harris II’s two home runs and a solid start from Hurston Waldrep. With this win, Atlanta extended its winning streak to ten games and reinforced its dominance over Washington this season. Although the Braves are out of playoff contention, they continue to perform with strong pitching, timely home runs, and effective bullpen work. Both teams will face off one more time in the series finale as Washington aims to break Atlanta's streak.
