The Atlanta Braves mounted an incredible comeback on Wednesday night at Citi Field, overcoming a 6-0 deficit to defeat the New York Mets 11-6. This victory was highlighted by a nine-run outburst in the fourth inning — the Braves’ biggest inning in almost five years.
The matchup was delayed for 95 minutes due to rain, and the Braves appeared to struggle early as starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco allowed six runs in the first two innings. The Mets capitalized on a two-run single by Pete Alonso, a sacrifice fly from Cedric Mullins in the first, followed by a 407-foot two-run homer from Juan Soto and an RBI double by Jeff McNeil in the second. The Braves found themselves down 6-0 heading into the fourth inning.
The turning point came in the fourth inning when Atlanta’s offense exploded for nine runs. David Peterson, who started for the Mets, struggled with control, issuing four walks in the inning, including a bases-loaded walk to Nick Allen. Jurickson Profar then knocked a three-run double, and Marcell Ozuna followed with an RBI single off Reed Garrett. The rally culminated with Michael Harris II launching a 417-foot grand slam to center field — his first grand slam since August 14 of the prior season. This nine-run inning marked Atlanta’s largest since September 9, 2020.
Following the shaky start, the Braves bullpen was outstanding. Aaron Bummer led the way with 2 1/3 scoreless innings, and a combination of relievers kept the Mets off the board for the remainder of the contest. Carrasco, despite his struggles, was backed up effectively by his relief corps after being pulled.
Marcell Ozuna added to Atlanta’s dominance with a two-run homer in the sixth. For the Mets, David Peterson endured a tough night, giving up a season-high six runs in just 3 1/3 innings. The loss continues the Mets’ slump, as they have now dropped 12 of their last 14 games.
Michael Harris II’s grand slam in the fourth inning was decisive, swinging the momentum entirely in favor of Atlanta. It was his first grand slam in nearly a year.
The Mets allowed at least nine runs in a single inning for only the ninth time in franchise history, and the first occurrence since April 16, 2019.
The series concludes Thursday night as Mets right-hander Kodai Senga (7-4, 2.30 ERA) faces Braves right-hander Bryce Elder (4-9, 6.12 ERA) in the deciding matchup of this three-game set.
The Atlanta Braves pulled off one of their most impressive comebacks in recent seasons, rallying from a sizeable early lead by the New York Mets behind a historic nine-run inning and breakout performances from Michael Harris II and Marcell Ozuna. This win further cements Atlanta’s resilience and exposes the Mets’ continued struggles in the 2025 MLB season, as both teams look ahead to the final game of the series.
