Mitch Garver delivered a clutch, go-ahead solo home run in the seventh inning, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 win against the Los Angeles Angels.
With the score tied in the bottom of the seventh, Mitch Garver connected on an elevated fastball from Angels reliever Connor Brogdon, sending it into the left-field bleachers for his ninth home run of the season. This crucial hit pushed the Mariners ahead and proved decisive as they continued their push in the AL West standings.
With the win, Seattle remained in a tie with the Houston Astros atop the AL West for the second straight night, underlining the importance of every late-season matchup as playoff implications grow.
The Mariners opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Jorge Polanco hit a two-out, two-strike RBI double against Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi. Polanco’s hit, his fifth consecutive game with a double, drove in Cal Raleigh, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
The Angels answered in the top of the seventh. Logan Davidson tied the game at one with an RBI double off of Mariners reliever Carlos Vargas. However, that would be all the offense the Angels could muster.
After Garver’s seventh-inning homer, Seattle’s bullpen protected the narrow lead. Closer Andrés Muñoz retired the Angels in the ninth, securing his 35th save of the season and preserving the Mariners’ critical win.
In the sixth inning, Mariners right fielder Victor Robles made a memorable defensive play, robbing Angels cleanup hitter Taylor Ward of a double that could have scored two runs. Robles’ catch preserved the Mariners’ lead and kept the Angels scoreless until the seventh inning.
Jorge Polanco’s double in the fourth inning marked his fifth consecutive game with a double, tying the longest active streak in the majors this season. It is also the longest such streak for a Mariners player since Raúl Ibañez achieved the same from September 28 to October 2, 2004.
The series continues Saturday with Angels left-hander Mitch Farris (1-0, 2.45 ERA) set to face Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo (13-7, 3.02 ERA) at T-Mobile Park.
The Seattle Mariners secured a close 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, thanks to a pivotal home run from Mitch Garver and key defensive plays. With postseason stakes on the line, Seattle remains level with Houston atop the AL West. Jorge Polanco continued his impressive streak of doubles, while the Mariners bullpen maintained their dominance. The series resumes with another crucial matchup, promising more drama for fans and playoff chasers alike.
