The New York Mets delivered a record-setting performance at home, overpowering the Miami Marlins 19-9 on Friday night. The Mets hit six home runs and set a new franchise record for the most runs scored in a home game.
Mets rookie Jonah Tong (1-0) made a spectacular major league debut, allowing just one earned run over five innings. The 22-year-old right-hander from Canada struck out six batters and didn't allow a walk, throwing 63 of his 97 pitches for strikes. Tong's unique over-the-top delivery drew comparisons to Tim Lincecum and earned him a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 42,112. The Mets gave Tong early run support with a 5-0 lead in the first inning and extended it to a commanding 12-0 by the second.
New York's offense was electric from the start. Juan Soto blasted a two-run homer, and Brandon Nimmo followed with a three-run shot before the Marlins could record an out in the first inning against Eury Pérez (6-4). Pete Alonso added a two-run homer in the second. Nimmo went deep again with a solo homer in the sixth. Later in the eighth, Mark Vientos homered, and Luis Torrens crushed a three-run shot, capping a six-run surge off Marlins infielder Javier Sanjoja.
Tong allowed his only runs in the fifth inning after fielding errors by Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. Lindor dropped a throw from Brett Baty on a force attempt, and Alonso mishandled a grounder by Jacob Marsee, allowing the Marlins to capitalize.
Otto Lopez stood out for the Marlins, homering and tallying a two-run single to drive in runs amid the Mets’ onslaught. The Mets secured their ninth win in 13 games, reinforcing their dominant midseason form.
Tong’s memorable debut ended on a high note when, after allowing a hit to Lopez, he struck out Liam Hicks looking with a 95 mph fastball to end the top of the fifth inning.
The Mets have now scored 19 runs in a game for the second time this season and for the seventh time in franchise history.
The series continues Saturday with Miami right-hander Edward Cabrera (7-7, 3.32 ERA) set to face New York left-hander David Peterson (8-5, 3.18 ERA).
The New York Mets made headlines with a dominant 19-9 victory over the Miami Marlins, marked by Jonah Tong’s impressive debut and record-setting offensive firepower, including six home runs. Defensive errors gave the Marlins a brief window, but New York’s relentless scoring secured a memorable win, furthering their strong run in the MLB season.
